NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS, WELLINGTON TEAMS. The following teams hpve been chosen to represent Wellington : First Team,—Guy, Perrin, Spiers, Thorpe, Trott, Joplin, W. Hood, D. Hood, Stratton, R. The following have been selected to represent Otago in the Challenge Shield tournament to be held in Wellington during the first week in August;— Goal, W. Davies (Technical Old Boys). Backs, Les Ireland (City) and V. Fleet (University). Halves—R. Butler, H. Gurr (City), and R. Leonard (University, captain). Forwards—L. Smith (City), W. Bridgman (University), D. Woodfield (City), A. Hinton (Technical Old Boys), and C. Mayston (City). Reserves.—Backs: H. Barrett (University) ; forwards, Berney (University, right), E. Brown (Albany, left). The above team will leave Dunedin on Saturday, August 1. AUSTRALIA v AUCKLAND. A DRAWN CONTEST. A brilliant exposition of hockey was provided by the match between Australia and Auckland, which ended in a draw—one goal each. Right from tho start of the match it was apparent that the Auckland forwards were out to force the pace, and they created groat excitement by rushing into tho circle. However, the was equal to the occasion, and so it followed almost throughout the match, the Auckland inner forwards doing particularly fine work, ' only to be stopped by the resourceful Australian backs. „ Tho first score came from a gradual movement by Australia, who worked up tho field, and tho Auckland goalkeeper was called on to save. From the resulting corner Seaman opened tho Australian account. The Auckland forwards attacked relentlessly, and shortly before half-time tho ball wont to Simpson from a corner, and he hit across to Hookhnm on tho loft, E. Walts Jlicking the falling hall into the not. The second spell was most exciting, hut, try as they might, the Auckland forwards could not score. The Waits brothers looked dangerous several times but on each occasion Australia saved. POSITION OP TEAMS.

’VARSITY A v. CITY. Before this important match commenced both the above teams, who are leading in the competition, had scored the same number of points for, and as the other previous time of meeting a drawn game was played, much interest was taken in the contest by hockey enthusiasts. The game resulted in another draw, and both teams will bo called upon to meet again before the season doses. The Oval No. 1 Ground was in a heavy condition, and it did not assist to make the game an idea! one. However, both teams played with plenty of vim from the outset, and neither let down till the final whistle blew Woodfold won the opening bully, and the play was taken temporarily into 'Varsity’s half, but shortly afterwards ’Varsity evened matters, and pegged away for some, time in City’s twentyfive, but City’s defence was sound, Lcn and lass Ireland playing very surely. A good rush of City’s forwards took the play into 'Varsity’s end, and from a good opening by Woodfeld, Duncan was given a dear shot; but Bmythc saved splendidly. Duncan got the rebound, and made no mistake this time. City 1, 'Varsity 0. Play still remained in 'Varsity’s half, hut the defence of 'Varsity’s captain, Leonard, and his two other halves (Tomkins and Barret) were very good. At times 'Varsity’s full-hacks were sure, but neither played the game that they are capable of. Hard hitting, which unfortunately was. persevered with by the backs on both sides, was responsible for bringing play into City’s Iwenly-fivo. A knock on Bullcr’s forehead was responsible for a short halt, and a, bully was given in City’s circle. As the result of it, Dunning shot a sniiirtg oak ’Varsity 1, City 1. Play was very even until half time, which saw the scores even. From the opening bully 'Varsity forwards. with a splendid rush, took the play into City’s goal month, where • Bridgman shot an excellent goal, catching it on the fly. 'Varsity 2, City 1. City’s halves, H. Gnrr and Butler, were combining well, and got City’s forwards going again, when Woodfeld and Duncan ’both faded shots in a scramble. and ultimately Duncan pushed one in. City 2,_ ’Varsity 2. Gnrr junior was playing steadily at times, and gave the hall again to Duncan, who was able to eider the, circle and shoot City’s third goal with, a reverse shot. City 3, 'Varsity 2. From this 'Varsity kept the ball in City’s twenty-five for fully fifteen minutes, and thoroughly .deserved their next goal, which was a beauty, from' Bernio on the wing. ’Varsity 3, City 3. The game became very willing from this. Too much obstruction on both .sides was noticeable, which should have been stoppedfl. Nevertheless both Messrs Calder and Starr controlled the game well and did not mar it bv too much whistle. Final: City 3 ’Varsity ... ... 3 TECHNICAL OLD ROYS v. UNIVERSITY B. This game, which was characterised by a fine friendly .spirit, was played on Oval No. 3 ground under very pleasant weather conditions. From the bully off give-and-take play followed for some time, but eventually Old Boys opened their score by G. Sew Hoy giving Hinton a nice centre, the latter accepting and finding the net. 1-0. Play became very fast, Old Boys having the better of it. Hinton secured again, and scored a second goal after

The ’Varsity livened up and took play to Lie other end, where Hutchings cleared well down the line to his forwards, where Henderson pounced down and shot the third goal for his side. 3-0. Up-and-down plav followed until half-time, no further score resulting. In the second spell play was more even, with Button playing very’ solidly for the Blues as centre half, and being well supported by his full-backs. Tim next goal scored was in favor oi Old Boys, Henderson finding the net from a scramble in tho circle. 4-0. .. ’Varsity took a hand again, and made a rally at the other end, scoring their first and only goal through the agency of Bowell. Play was immediately transferred to tho other end, and from a difficult angle Chapman added another goal to Tech’s score. Even play followed until the final whistle, with no further changes in the score, the result of the match being: Technical Old Boys J ’Varsity B ... ... ••• * For the winners Hinton, Jory, Henderson, G. Sew Hoy, and' Davies (in goal) were conspicuous, while Button. Bowell, “ Bol,” and the goalie played splendidly for ’Varsity. Messrs Patterson and Johnson controlled the game very efficiently. OTAGO v. TRAINING COLLEGE 11. Otago met Training College 11. on tlio No, 1 Ground at the Oval, the playing area being in a better condition than expected. Both teams were playing poor hookey, and after a quarter of an hour's up-and-down play Miss Hanlin drew first bipod for Otago. Otago succeeded in adding three further goals to their total before halftime was called. On resumption of the second spell Otago again took the offensive, netting the ball three times before time was called. Goals for the wdnners ivore scored by Misses Hanlin, Gray, Lawson (2), and Johnston (3). Final score: Otago 7 Training College II 0 Mr A. Robinson controlled the game. TRAINING COLLEGE I. v. MOMONA • Training College 1. and Momona tried conclusions on the No. 1 Ground at the Oval. The first spell was evenly contested, Momona securing first score, which the College team equalised. The second spell was somewhat different, Training College having things very much their own way, scoring no lower than six goals. Final score: Trailing College I - 7 h Momona 1 Mr R. S.
