DOMAIN BOARD

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of tho Ocean Beach Domain Board was held at the Town Hall this morning, all present except Mr Douglas, who sent an apology. Mr J. 11. Hancock presided, and was reappointed chairman for the twenty-third term. The Chairman presented the following report for the year ended March ol St. Clair Beach. —Occasional westerly winds tend to lower tho sand on tho St. Clair front, but as soon as a change ! to the north-east sets in tho beach makes good, and js at tho present time in excellent condition. Sand Bank.—The main protecting sand bank, which extends from St. Clair to Lawyer Head,' continues to grow in a marvellous way, aided by tho marram grass planted as required from time to • time to fill every vacancy as it occurs. | The quantity of ‘sand detained here anI nually is enormous, and from a rough 1 calculation is at least 500,C00 tons.

| Playgrounds—Several grounds are in course of preparation, and in a few years will be of great use to the various sporting bodies. East Park has received a coating of several hundred loads of clay and soil and a liberal sowing of grass seed. Tho board is indebted to the Ladies’ Hockey Club for the suin' of £5, and the' Rugby Union for £2O towards Die cost of this work. Further levelling and seeding will be continued in West Park, where j a full-sized Rugby ground is in course iof preparation. | Tennis Courts.—The levelling for this i purpose off Yictoria road ami opposite ! the racecourse has been completed, and the surface covered with clay. It is proposed to sow the surface down with grass and maintain it as a. grass court or playground until required for tennis, j Rubbish Tip.—ln order to fill a huge i hollow in tho sandhills caused by a wash- ' out in the past, household refuse and : trade waste are being lipped opposite Moreau street and covered with grassy material, which tho St. Kilda Council is j gbod enough to cart thereon from their i streets. This will ultimately enable the 1 board to plant the surface with shrubs ; and trees, besides strengthening the sand-* hills against the sea.

Pathways,—Tho paths through the sandhills are much appreciated, and. although only made of rough material, they serve a purpose. As suggested in last year’s icpurt, it was proposed to continue this work. This has been done from tho St. Kilda entrance toward Lawyer Head for a distance of half a mile, where it turns toward the Tomahawk road heyond Tahnna Park. Tins work should bo continued for at least half a mile further.

Boy Scouts.—Application has been made on behalf of the St. Kilda Scouts for a hall site, and it is recommended that it be granted, subject .to tho usual conditions governing public domains and at a peppercorn rent. Lighting.—The constable at St. Kilda asks That the road to the beach be lighted. The distance is about 250yds, and would require throe or four poles and as many lights at a cost of £SO, as estimated by the electrical engineer. Finance.—The revenue for the year, comprising levies on contributing bodies, rent, and sundry receipts, totalled £1,189 lls Id, which, with-the balance brought forward from the previous year of £640 13s TOd, brings the total revenue up to £1,830 4s lid. The expenditure amounted to £924 lls lOd, leaving a balance to cany forward for the new year of £905 15s Id.

Tho motion for the adoption of tho report was moved by the mayor and car ried.
