IRISHMAN LOSES HiS GASH By the detention of a man in I’itt street, Sydney, early one evening recently, the story lias been revived of a “madman ” in the Domain, and “ a rajah ” with plenty of money to lose. Tho sequel to the story, according to tho police, is that a. young Irishman lost the £65 10s which was to see him through his return in Ireland, where he. was to he married. It is the old preliminary to the common mice-card inu, with a few embellishments, and the man detained is alleged to have played the part of the madman. Tho victim in tho case was met outside a shipping office, whore ho had booked his passage to Ireland, by a stranger, who soon struck up a conversation, and led him to the Domain. Here they were made curious by the antics of a man apparently mad. Pound notes were, hanging out of his pockets, and ho seemed to bo gnawing the hark of a tree. Another stranger came along, and when the “ madman ” was induced to talk, ho said that an Indian rajah had won a lot of money from him tho previous day', and had promised to return to play again. One of the strangers suggested to the unsuspecting Irishman that the opportunity was too good to lose, and asked how much money ho had. The Irishman, who, as he told the police afterwards, saw an opportunity of taking some, easy money to Ireland for the wedding for which he had been saving up, replied tjiat he had £55 !os. _ “ Give it to me for a while," said the stranger. “We might as well have (his money ns the rajah. The rest of the story is too old to retell. The £65 10s was won by tho “madman,” and he and tho two strangers left in different leaving the Irishman to his grief. The victim reluctantly cancelled his passage to Ireland, obtained a refund of his passage money, and, securing a job in Sydney, started saving again. He . told his story to the police, who arrested a man alleged to be one of the three. This man was remanded on £IOO bail, but failed to appear at tho court, and has not been seen since.
