DEATHS FROM WOOD ALCOHOL.

WASHINGTON. January 27.
The Census Bureau announces i that deaths from illicit, poison liquor are remarkably few. the mortality statistics indicating’ that- drinkers of _ “ bootleg ” beverages are dying from plain alcoholism. ■ New York City had ten deaths from wood alcohol in 3910. and fourteen in 1922. Tho deaths due to alcoholism were respectively 621 and 226. The alcoholism death rate in the United Slates in 1922 was 6.5 per 100.000 of (he population, and in 1023 it was 5,2, while before Prohibition such deaths ranged between 5.6 and 5.9. In New York, whieh is considered typical of the largo American cities, if is shown that wood alcohol deaths in 1919 numbered thirty eight, in 1920 twenty nine, in 1921 fourteen, while deaths from alcoholism were 176, 98, and 110 in ihci respective years. The Prohibition Enforcement Bureau announces that, thirty-five Federal Pro. hik.ition agents wen’ killer! while in theperformance of their duties since enforcement begun. A. and N.Z, Cable.
