AUCKLAND, January 28.

At the inquest concerning the death of Esther Mary Watts, who died from injuries sustained through being knocked down by a- motor bus driven by Stanley Alfred Rule in Newmarket on January 16, Margaret Thompson, a passenger on tho bus, said she was frightened by the speed maintained. The speed was excessive at the time of the accident.

Constable Powell said that Rule pointed out skid marks which he said indicated the track of the bus.. The marks were close to the footpath, and were discernible for 56ft. Rule said he was travelling at twenty miles an hour, and had sounded his horn when he saw deceased, who appeared to hesitate, and then stepped forward.

Mr Finlay, who appeared for Rule, said he had a number of _ witnesses whose depositions would conflict considerably with those already given. . It has been ascertained that the skid marks already mentioned had been on the road before the accident. At counsel’s request an adjournment was granted until Monday.
