OTAGO MOTOR CLUB

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Otago Motor Club was held in the K.S,A. club rooms hist, night, (ho president (.Mr A. K. Anscll) in lha chair. SOUTH ISLAND UNION. In reporting on the quarterly meeting of tho South Island Motor Union in Christchurch (which ho attended as delegate), Mr J. L. Passmore said that his mission to Christchurch had been a failure, lie was afraid that the South Island Union was becoming a Christchurch union. South Island clubs outside Christchurch were poorly represented, and if the clubs and associations outside Christchurch did not take more interest in the South Island Union it would become purely a Christchurch body. lie had proposed having two road boards constituting the Highways Board, but he was opposed by tho Christchurch delegates, and he withdrew his motion, as ho did not want the Government to say that tho union turned the proposal down. He knew tho matter could be brought up again. In regard to the allocation of money, he was told that the Otago Motor Club was pushing tho matter so that the road through Waikouaiti would be good for the Dunedin Exhibition. He retaliated by saying that the Otago Motor Club was working in the interests of motorists, and was not considering the Exhibition in connection with the Main North road. While in Christchurch he had interviewed several tyre importers in connection with tho tyre tax, and he was told that they favored'a pound weight tax. He bad proposed this at tho union meeting, and it had met with favor, lire union decided to recommend a pound weight tax to tho Government instead of tho present system of tyre taxation. Mr Ansell ‘said that if that system of taxation could be introduced it would bo all for progress. GENERAL. The Bruce County Council wrote stating that a start had been made with the erection of handrails on the bridges in the Manuka Gorge.—The letter was received, and the Chairman stated that the committee had donated £lO towards the cost of this work. The engineer of the ( lutha County Council wrote asking if the club was prepared to assist, either by providing signs or bearing some portion of the cost in erecting signposts at several road junctions on the Main South road from Dunedin to Invercargill.—lt was _ decided to attend to the erection of the signs. It was decided that a deputation wait on the Taieri.County Council with a view to asking that a bridge be erected over the Silverstream at Wharo Elat. Thirty-nine new members were elected. The Chairman said that tho club led in the membership campaign, the Canterbury Automobile Club being second. It was decided to write to the Canterbury Automobile Association asking that tho color-route scheme be completed in its territory. It was decided that tho next general meeting be held on January 20. The Chairman reported that the club w&uld take possession of tho new club rooms in Moray place on January 1.
