KINDERGARTEN ASSOCIATION

PRESENTATION OF DIPLOMAS. On Tuesday evening, in the Otago Women’s Club, the Dunedin Free Kindergarten Association held the presentation of diplomas ceremony for tho kindergarten students. About seventy or eighty students and their friends, committee members, local committee members, and the examiners assembled. Mrs T. K. Sidey (president of tho association) was in the chair. Dr Lawson, Director of Education at Otago University, gave a very interesting address on ‘ Kindergarten; Its Principles and Progress,’ pointing out the aims and truths of kindergarten, _ and what benefit both students and children derived from it.

Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., in tho absence of Professor White, presented tho diplomas to tho eight grartnates who had completed their two years’ course and gained their diplomas. Mr Sidey pointed out that every girl had gained honors (over 80 per cent, in her examination) in at least ono subject, and that one (Miss Saunders) had honors in four subjects. Miss Bett had gained honors in handwork; (Miss Eraser, in hygiene and child psychology; Miss Grieve, in kindergarten practice; Miss lleywood, in kindergarten practice, hygiene, child study, and handwork; Miss Hogg, in hygiene and child psychology; Miss Kilpatrick, in hygiene; Miss Sullivan, in handwork Miss Saunders. in kindergarten practice, hygiene, child psychology, and handwork. Miss Dutton then spoke a few words on tho work of the first-year students, and also on tho work of the examiners (Misses Goldsmith, Maxwell, F. Ross, Dalrymplc, Perm in, Burton (2), and Mrs Sidey). _ Two hook prizes for brushwork to Misses Heywood and Saunders, and ono for drawing to Miss Malcolm, wore given by Miss Scott (teacher in art); and two prizes were presented by Miss Dutton tor competitions in which the students had competed during tho year. The first for the “ best, model Maori village ” was won by Miss Saunders, and the other for a “'Design for a Kindergarten Frieze ” wa.s won by bliss Fraser. A concert programme and supper completed the evening, musical items being rendered by Misses Dawson, Hancock, and Heywood, and two little plays were staged.
