A letter -was receu'ctl from Professoi Strong, which had iieen placed before (ho council at its previous meeting, and which recommended that cookery classes bo continued next year for Archcrfleld students, and that classes in needlework bo also instituted. The council recommended to agree to the institution of those courses in 1925. The committee considered a letter from the Sydney University Extension Board, dated October | 24, concerning the proposed visit of Sir ! Ernest Rutherford. It was resolved that I the registrar communicate with the other j New Zealand colleges, and ascertain what I steps they proposed to take, stating that j this University was willing to contribute jup to £59. The registrar was further ! directed to communicate with the Sydney j University Extension Board, the Chancol- | lor and chairman to he associated with him in the drafting of the letter. The committee received a report from Messrs Morrell and L, I). Ritchie concerning the | allocation of a. definite sum to the Professorial Board Tor library expenditure. It was resolved that the sum of £7OO Vo annually allocated to the Professorial ; Board, the board to be responsible for the distribution of tin's amount among the difi ferent departments, and the hoard he in- ■ formed that this amount was to include tiro purchase of journals and the cost of binding, and that it must not ho cx- ' ccedcd; the new arrangement to operate las from January 1 next. The committee 1 considered a proposal that suitable re- ' cognition bo given to students to whom Beverly Scholarships wore awarded, but : were unable to hold such scholarships. It I was resolved that a book prize of the value of £5. with a suitable inscription, ’ lie awarded in such eases, the Professorial Board to bo asked for its opinion. The Chancellor and the Chairman of Commit- | tee reported that they iiad examined the accounts of the Beverly Trust. The maximum expenditure to width the council was at present committed (the expenditure which would he incurred if all ; the scholarships were taken up at (heir maximum value) was £620, and the minimum expenditure (the expenditure which would be incurred if all the scholarships were taken up at their minimum) was £SOO. The. income from the fund was estimated to reach the figure of £965 per annum. They recommended that the amount of £3OO, which was now charged to the fund in respect of the salary of Mr Sutherland, mechanic in the physics department, be instead applied towards part payment of the salary of Mr Hinton, the lecturer in physics, and that he should he given the title of Beverly lecturer in physics. Since making this allocation, and after providing for the payment of scholarships, there would be a residue of more than £3OO, and since Mr Beverly in his will expressed a desire that preference should he given to the teaching of mathematical, mechanical, and physical sciences, it wits recommended that, if the council wished to appoint an assistant to the professor of mathematics, his salary, up to £3OO, be provided from, the fund. Mr Wallace moved that the position of clinical pathologist ho referred back to the committee.
