I At yesterday’s meeting of tho Board of I the New: Zealand Trotting Association the I secretary of tho Royal Agricultural Soj doty wrote stating that, although the | consensus of opinion among breeders and the. general public was that tho Royal Show was a distinct success, yet some of the. dominion’s newspapers had adversely criticised its management, and therefore it behoved the council of the society to make good any shortcomings. The association was asked to forward any suggestions for tho betterment of the organisation and tho carrying out of tho next Royal Show at Christchurch. The chairman (Mr P. Selig) said that from what ho could gather it was not a very wonderful show as far as trotting was concerned, but he thought that tho next show, which would be held in Christchurch (the centre of a district famous for trotting), would bo a great deal better. He thought the board might appoint a committee to consult with the judge with a view to offering suggestions. Tho matter was left to the executive. A deputation from the committee appointed in Balclutha to help in working up an exhibit from tho district at the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition waited upon tho South Otago Hospital Board at its meeting yesterday. The deputation, which consisted of Messrs S. V. White (mayor) Walter, Algie, and Russell, pointed outdo the board the desirability of having a South Otago bay at the Exhibition. Mr Jasper Clark (a member of the board) stated that the Bruce people were favorable to the idea that the exhibit should lie a South Otago one, and not merely a county affair. The chairman (the Hon. A. S. Malcolm) said tho members had that day discussed the matter informally, and ho* would suggest that a meeting of delegates from Bruce and Clutha be hold at Balclutha next Clutha County Council day, when tho matter could be fully discussed with representatives from all parts of South Otago. Mr White embodied this in a motion, which was carried. Tho mover added that ho would make the meeting a public one, so that anyone interested could attend and give tho meeting the benefit of his suggestions. The deputation then thanked. o the board and retired. ’Pile fifty-eiglitlr annual Summer Show of the Southland A. and P. Society opened Yesterday in glorious weather. There wore excellent entries, and a. large attendance for an off'day. Some excellent stock I W as exhibited, and in this connection a ! prominent breeder stated that it was quite ; up to the standard of the recent Royal Show. Crowds a-ro in the city frora_ all over the dominion, and the indications pointed to a record attendance to-day (people’s day). A most enjoyable* entertainment was given at the Benevolent Institution on Monday evening by members of the following Bonds of Hope-St- Clair, St. Hilda South Dunedin, Gaversham, RosIvn, Cargill Rond, Mornington, Ravensbonrne, St. Andrew’s, Tabernacle, and Hanover street. The programme included vocal and instrumental solos and duets, action songs, choruses, and elocutionary items. During an inter ml fiuit and sweets were handed round by the children. A hearty vote of thanks and appreciation to the performers was moved by Mr Porteous, and carried by acclamation and cheers.
