SANDERS CUP TRIALS. •in KtirroK Sir, —I have been a much interested spectator from the shore of the whole o. the eight races sailed in the above trial? and I sympathise with the selectors i judging which boat shall represent Otag races in Auckland. 1 think everybody will concede that Mr Wiseman iundoubtedly the beet “ skipper,” but, ii my opinion, it is very much open to ques tion if lona is the best boat, and I put the following reason forward in justifies tion for this opinion :—ln the sixth ratlona won by 30sec, the same time emanating the second and third boats. In th< seventh race lona again won, the interva being 35sec between each of the boats From the results of these two races, whie! I have cited as being sailed under fair! equal weather conditions, it will be sect that only one minute and one minute and ten seconds' respectively separated the three boats. The point, then, is this that, if lona has the best skipper am’ there is only such a email margin o; time between the three boats, what woulc have happened if Mr Wiseman had been sailing either of the other boats? I do not take into much account tinresult of the eighth race, sailed on Saturday last, because the wind was so “fluky’ that anything might happen, and, in any case, the course did not give anv of th( competitors a chance of showing its quali lies in a dead “ beat to windward.” I am only a new arrival in the past few months, and am not personally known to any of the owners or crews, but I have been a keen yachtsman outside New Zea land, and, prior to being interested ir thirty-six-footers, I was a fairly successful skipper of eighteen-footers, and I must say I think that Kia Ora is worth considering in view of the strong sailing winds that Auckland Harbor can “ put up.”—l am, etc., Tom-tit.
