GERMAN ELECTIONS

THE REPUBLIC SAFE. A PEACE VERDICT. SET-BACK FOR MONARCHISTS. Prtss Auocifttion—By Telegraph—OopyrvH LONDON, December 8. (Received December 9, at 10.30 a.m.) Reuter’s Berlin correspondent says: " It is now clear that the Republic has been victorious over the forces of reaction and Monarchism, and the policy of the new Government will bo conciliation and the fulfilment of the Treaty of Versailles and the Dawes obligations. The Social Democrats will be the strongest party in the new Reichstag, with a probable gain of about thirty-five seats. It is possible that the old so-called Wirth Coalition, composed of Social Democrats, German Democrats, and tho Catholic Centre Party, with the support of various minor parties, will have a very small absolute majority over the Opposition, even if tho latter includes the German People’s Party, led by Dr Stresemann. “ A significant feature of the elections has been tho complete collapse of Ludcndorffists, who have gone over practically en masse to tho German National Party, which is now the second strongest party in the House. “ The Communists also lost considerably, chiefly to the Social Democrats. They havo about forty-five scats, compared with sixty-two in the old Reichstag. The Catholic Centro Party maintained its position, while the Gorman Democrats, tho German People’s Party, and tho Bavarian People's Party gained several seats. There are now three alternatives toi tho formation of a new Government firstly, a big coalition of the Social De-! mocrats, tho German People s Party, tho Centre Party, and the Democrats; secondly, a Wirth coalition; thirdly, the continuance in office of the present Government under Dr Marx and Dr Stresemann, with tho benevolent neutrality of the Social’ Democrats." —Reuter. THE FIRST RETURNS. SOCIALISTS LEADING. BERLIN, December 7. With the election returns so tor very incomplete, the German Democrats and Social Democrats appear to be gaining m Berlin at the expense of tho extreme Nationalists and Communists. Tho Social Democrats ore doing well at Hambuig, Munich, and Mannheim. Tlie German Nationals are also scoring at Munich, where the Communists and German People’s Party are losing heavily. The last named party, however, is lead ing at Karlsruhe. The Ludendorffists are practically wiped out, and the Communists have lost heavily. "Admiral Ton Tirpitz has been reelected. Apparently the Socialists will be the strongest party in the now Reichstag.— Reuter and A. and N.Z. Cable. DAWES PLAN SAFE. BERLIN, December 8.
