| It was in the reign of Edward 1., six mid a-half centuries ago, that the office of Attorney-General was instituted. In 1277, however, the holder of the office, William Bonneville, was known as Attornatus Regis, and this title was held for a considerable time. Formerly the Attor-ney-General of Great Britain was permitted I to retain his private practice on taking the office, but the difficulties experienced through this system during the sitting of the Parnell Commission in 1888 brought a change, and on July 5, 1895, the chief law officer of the Crown was deprived of . the right to continue to take private briefs.
