GARDEN FETES

MONTECILLO HOME. In order to help to support disabled soldiers in the various institutions a garden fete was held at the lied Dross Montocillo Homo on Saturday afternoon. A large number of people were present. The function was formally opened by the mayor (Mr H. L. Tapley), who said that ho felt it a very great privilege indeed to bo there to open the garden fete. They could not do enough for the soldiers who went to the war, and those of them who came back still suffering from wounds and sickness. The men at Montecillo, Wakari, and the Public Hospital made up various classes of articles. The work helped to keep the minds of the soldiers occupied, and the proceeds from the sale of their handiwork helped them along life's way. They should do something to show their appreciation of these men’s services, and dip their hands deep into their pockets. The soldiers would then feel that something tangible had been done to show that appreciation. They owed them a debt that could never be adequately repaid. The Rev. V. G. Bryan King, president of the Red Cross, returned sincere thanks to the mayor for opening the function and for his kind remarks. Patrons were soon round the -work stalls, and the, men were kept busy disposing of their wares. Mr Russell (secretary for tho recreation fund) reported very fair business. Lady members of the Red Cross Committee, ably assisted by the home staff and several very willing young ladies, were kept fully occupied in dispensing ice creams and also afternoon tea in the largo marquee. Tho Third Artillery Band was in attendance, and an excellent programme was rendered. Those attending spent a very enjoyable afternoon, and tho fete was a marked success. ANDERSON BAY.
