SEYMOUR HICKS SEASON
CELEBRATED ACTOR TO APPEAR IN DUNEDIN.
Dunedin's thcaU'ical year is to conclude in the happiest fashion with the first appearance of that celebrated English actor, Mr Seymour Hicks, and his equally celebrated" wife, Miss Elhilinc Tcrriss, who will commence at His Majesty s on December 26 (Boxing Nigto.) a season of fourteen nights under the direction of S:r Benjamin bull or and Mr Jlngli .1. Ward. Mr Hicks's fame as a comedian is so well known Hie world over that, it is not necessary to accentuate the importance of the occasion lieyond recording that ho will produce the following selected list of his ■greatest London successes The Man in Dress Clothes,’ ‘ .Scrooge and ‘ Sleeping Partners’ (a- double, hill), ‘ Broadway Jones,’ and ‘ The Love Habit.’ Mr Hicks, who comes with a complete now company, is one of the outstanding features in the theatrical life of London, where he has held a prominent status for many years as actor, manager, playwright, and producer. During Ins stage career Mr Hicks lias appeared in scores of plays, ranging from Shakespearean drama "to the lightest, of musical plays, and so groat is bis versatility that he has made notable successes in every style oi production. His Richard is regarded by competent London critics ns being one of the most brilliantly impressive readings of that part the British stage has seen. In both drama- and melodrama he has contributed many fine which have added to the lustre of the British stage. In the realms of musical comedy, light opera, comedy, and so forth, ho is acknowledged as being an unusually brilliant artist. As an author Mr Hicks has contributed much to the stage, having been a. prolific writer of musi-M comedies, plays, -and phantasies. In this latter category his ‘ .Bluebell in .Fairyland ’ is a notable example. Written and produced by him in 1902, this charming fairy play has been several times revived in leading West Fml theatres, and was chosen as the Christmas attraction at the Aldwyeb Theatre in 'December last. At, the same, time a melodrama, of which he was the author, teas presented at- Drury Lane. In addition to writing fifty-six plays, ho has also adapted several French pieces for the English si age, with marked success, among them being ‘ The Man in Dress Clothes,’ and ‘ Sleeping Partners.’ Of the plays which he has cither written alone or in collaboration with other authors, -there are many well known to Australian theatregoers, including ‘ The Gay Gordons.’ ‘The Earl and the Girl,’ ‘The Catch of the Season,’ ‘One of the. Best,’ ‘ Sporting Life.’ ‘ A Runaway Girl,’ and ‘A Little Dutch Girl.’
