ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY

For the fourth concert of the thirtyseventh season the Dunedin Orchestral Society has pleasure in notifying its subscribers and patrons of a quite exceptional programme. Mr Coombs has had in diligent practice the undermentioned numbers, and is confident that the closing concert by this old-established society will yank with the best ever given;—The ‘ Ctasse-Xoisette Suite,’ No. 2 (Tschaikowsky); Suite, ‘ Mascarade. ’ (Laconic): ‘ Fgmont ’ overture (Bee.thay<m) ; selection from ‘The Flying Dutchman’ (Wagner); ‘Coronation March’ (Kilonberg) ; and march ‘ Tnnnhauser ’ (Wagner). The four numbers of the ‘ Casso-Noisette ’ suite, never fail to appeal to an audience. Tho rhythm is quaint and most unusual, and a wonderful contrast in conception of melody to most of this composer's other works. The society has rarely placed before its patrons a more attractive item than Laconic's ‘Suite Mascarade.’ It. is repeated in deference to numerous requests by subscribers. The selection from ‘ Tho Flying Dutchman ’ is a splendid one, embracing well-known solos from the opera, and, like the ‘Tannhauser’ march by the same composer, gives plenty of opportunity to the brass. The singers will bo Miss Marjorie Beynoldson and Mr L. A. North. Miss Beynoldson has recently arrived from London, where she studied at the Guildhall School of Music, under Signor Garcia. She has won three scholarships, and has sung at the London Operahouse and Stolls’ Halls, besides appearing at many important musical functions in the principal towns in England a.nd Scotland. During tho war Miss Reynoldson was attached to the N.A.8.C., and for three years her musical gifts were devoted to the call of that useful branch of the Army service. Tho lady’s songs for this concert will be ‘Softly Awakes My Heart,’ from ‘Samson and Delilah,’ and ‘Dream of Delight’ (Nicholls). Miss Iloynoldson’s voice is mezzo-soprano, and in the lower register is said to bo almost contralto in quality. Mr North is now recognised as ono of our leading singers.
