SOUTH DUNEDIN PRESBYTERIANS
NEW PASTOR WELCOMED. A welcome social to the Rev. D. Heggie, who was recently inducted as minister of the South Dunedin Presbyterian Church, was held last evening in Reid Hall, The Rev. F. M. Beattie (interim moderator) presided. The proceedings opened with prayer offered by the Bov. John Miller. The Chairman, in his opening remarks, slated I hat, it was a pleasure to know that once again the parish of South Dunedin had a minister, and (here was no doubt they bad a good and God-fearing man to w : alcb over" them. They prayed that Mr Heggie would long hold the reins of government, and bring more people in to the flock. He extended a hearty welcome to their new minister in the name of the Presbytery, and on behalf of the parishioners. The Bov. R. Scott Allan said that although he had not previously known Mr Heggie, ho hoped that the pleasant relationships which existed between himself (the speaker) and Mr Fairmaid, the previous minister, would continue with Mr Heggie. He wished to congratulate them on 'behalf of his charge at Musselburgh, and express their delight that the vacancy had been filled so soon. There was no doubt that Mr Heggie had a big work ahead of him, but lie was quite sure that their new minister would do his utmost to build tip the community-at large. The speaker concluded by referring to the qualities of Mr Fairmaid, and expressed the hope that lie would soon be on the road to health.
The. Rev. J. Miller, on behalf of the Kirk Session of St. Glair, the Rev. W. F; Evans, Mr J. Ewart, (South Dunedin Kirk (Session), Mr J. Nelson (Committee of Management), Mr G. B. Harper (Sunday school), Mr J. Roy (Youth of Church and choir), and Mrs E. Moore (Ladies’ Guild) also welcomed Mr Heggie, assuring him of their help in the work of the church. On behalf of other denominations the Rev. Guy Thornton (South Dunedin Baptist Church) and the Rev. E. G. Harkncss (St. Kilda Methodist Church) offered the congratulations of their respective charges, and wished Mr lloggio every success. In replv, Mr Heggie, who was received with loud applause, said it was one of the greatest nights in his life. He wished, in the first place, to thank them all for the wonderful welcome given himself and family. Ho would certainly do all he could to push mi the great work of (he church, although he was quite sure he could never llii the place ol their previous minister, [u conelnsion, be asked them to help him in the work that lay ahead, and said he was sure that everything would go well. During- the evening musical selections were rendered by the Smith Dunedin Presbyterian Church Orchestra. Supper was provided, and the proceedings dosed with the benediction.
