BOWLING

OTAGO BOWLING CLUB. The annual meeting of the club was held in the pavilion last evening, Mr E. Falconer in the chair. There was only a fair attendance. In the first place Mr Falconer asked members to stand in respect to members who had suffered bereavements—viz., Messrs Ewing, Sundstrum, Kennedy, and J. M. Brown. This was done.

The annual report stated that the green had a first-rate sole of grass, and never, at the time of the year, looked bettor than at present. The committee was conscious of its indebtedness to Mr C. Speight (green supervisor). Members could look forward with every confidence to the greenkeeper (Mr Warren) providing an excellent playing surface in the coming season. The membership stood at seventyfive, quite a falling-off from previous years. It was, however, gratifying to report some thirteen applications already for membership for the coming season. As regarded interclub matches, the unforeseen depletion of playing members above referred to upset calculations, for the club had been unable to play the full twelve rinks entered in the banner competition. In the circumstances it was satisfactory to improve on the previous years’ performances in these games. In the four-rink matches a creditable showing was made. VTlie Loving Gup match with BalmacewemUlub provided the most enjoyable and sociable contest of the season. Excellent entries were received for the various club ties. The results were as follow: —Championship singlas, W. Robson: handicap singles, W. Robson; championship doubles, 0. Strang and J. Lucas (s); president’s rinks—F. H. King, E. Cameron, H. Cook, K. Morrison. During the season the club suffered a severe loss through the death of its much-esteemed patron and founder, Mr W. Dawson. Thanks were recorded to several members for special sendees rendered. Tho Chairman, moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet (which showed a credit balance of £22), alluded briefly to the various items mentioned in the report, which, he said, was fully explanatory. After making short reference td one or two items the motion was seconded and carried without discussion.

Mr Falconer then presented the prizes won during the past season, making happy reference to the various gentlemen who had succeeded in the different events. It was resolved that the memory of Mr Wm. Dawson, the club’s late patron, be honored by the institution of a contest for a trophy which would perpetuate his name. Special resolutions of thanks to Mr W. G. Hay (hon. solicitor) and Mr C. J. Strang (lion, secretary) were carried with applause. The meeting next considered the following motion:—" (1) That after the payment of liabilities the assets of the Otago Bowling Club be handed over to the Otago Bowling Club, Ltd. (2) That the Otago Bowling Club he dissolved as from September 2, 1924.”—With little discussion this was resolved upon without dissent,, on the motion of Mr E. Falconer, seconded by Mr J. Cooke. This concluded the business of the Otago Bowling Club, and the meeting proceeded to consider the affairs of Otago Bowling Club, Ltd, The first report of the directors stated that the total number of shares so far allotted by the company is 830, of £1 each. The Chairman said that, though the report stated that the shares allotted numbered 830, later applications had brought the total to 965, and a total of 1,000 shares was in sight. Mr W. G. Hay said that the now company was making a most promising beginning. The main body of members had supported the promoters heartily. Altogether the prospects for the now company were good. The election of officers resulted as follows ;—President-, Mr E. Cameron- vicepresident, Mr J. Henderson; directors Messrs C- Speight, J. Cooke, E. Falconer, Rose, C. R. Smith, H._Cook, and Watts; Social Committee —Messrs A. Walker, H. Cook, F. Dickson, and A. Ellison. The appointments of secretory, assistant secretary, green committee, and solo selector were left to the directors.

The by-laws of the new company were explained bv Mr W. G. Hay and adopted. A vote of thanks to Mr E. Falconer concluded a lengthy meeting.
