SOCIAL AND PERSONAL.

Mr and ’Mrs Liggins, of Perth, West Australia, are visiting friends hero. Miss Denniston has gone to Christchurch. ( Mrs F. Dunlop has gone to Invercargill. Jin Radcilfle is staying with Mrs Sparrow. Miss England, of Wellington, is staying with Dr Muriel Bell till the end of the conference. Mrs Fracr, another delegate for the conference, from Christchurch, is the guest of her sister, Miss M'Lcan. Miss Cardale is a guest at the vicarage, North-east Valley. Three delegates to the conference of the National Council of Women are unfortunately, at the last moment, nnabla to be present. These are Mrs M'Lcan (from Auckland), Mrs Sheppard (from Christchurch), and Miss Hewlett (also from Christchurch). Mr and Mrs Wheeler and their children left by the Moeraki for a holiday trip to Melbourne and Sydney. The engagement is announced of Miss 0. Sloan, third daughter of Mr and Mrs W. P. Sloan, Pleasant Valley, to Mr W. H. Garden, Melbourne, elder son of Sirs Garden, Highgate, Dunedin. Also of Miss Kathleen M'Sweeney, daughter of Mr and Mrs M. M'Sweeney, Adair, to Dr Edward Brown, of Edondale, second son of Mrs Brown, Woodhangh, Dunedin. The Misses Allan have gone to Sydney for a month or twos holidaying. Miss Martin .and Miss Beth Manchester, Oamaru, are the guests of Mrs Peter M'Callum, Queens drive Mrs Riley, and Mrs Batchelor and their families arc spending the holidays at Waitati. Mr .and (Mrs Alpers, from Christchurch, are at Leith House for a short visit. Miss Ryan, sister of the registrar of births, etc., here, is also at Leith House. Miss I. Farquharson has been appointed " school nurse ” for the Invercargill district. Mr G. J. Lancaster (head master of the Christchurch Boys’ High School), Mrs Lancaster, and bliss Lancaster, who have been staying at Onslow House, returned to Christchurch on Monday. Mrs Stock gave a very pleasant bridge party on Monday, the players being Mr and'Mrs Oldham, Mrs Edmond, Mr Ritchie, Dr Batchelor, and Mr Evans. Miss M'Kerrow gavei a farewell morning party for the Misses Allan, The guests included Mrs G. Callaway, Miss Brent, Messrs Northcroft and Brent. Dr Emily Siedoberg was " at homo ” to some of the visiting delegates of the National Council of Women last Sunday. Mrs Kane, Miss Kane, Miss Hasten, and Miss Nqwbfigin were there, and of local people %ve/e present Mr and Mrs Morrell, Mr and Mrs Angell, Mrs Carmalt Jones, Mrs Little, Mrs Leech, .Mrs Siedeberg, bliss Scideberg (from Auckland), Miss Martin, Miss Ida White, Miss Edith Howes, and bliss Gow. Another good bridge evening was spent at Mrs Marshall Macdonald’s home last Saturday, with Mrs Stock, Mrs Edmond, Mrs Hilton, blrs Do Clive Lowe, Mrs Fenwick, Mrs Falla, and bliss K. M’Lean as guests. Word has just come through that Miss L. Roberts has passed the first section of her examination for teaching massage and medical gymnastics. Miss Roberts early this year'left to study at St. Thomas’s Hospital in London, and from all accounts she is doing a lot of hard work. She Is also able to put in a little time in visiting different parts of England. Mrs W. R. Don, of this town, and dominion president of the W.C.T.U., and Miss C. Henderson, M.A., of Chnslcliurcb. are both in America. They recently bad the pleasure of attending'the first Juvenile Court established in the States, presided over by Hie famous Judge Lindsay. These ladies "were introduced to the staff, and when they return we hope to hear details about tills court. Last Saturday the W.C.T.U. gave an enjoyable concert in the Hanover Street Baptist Hall to help raise funds for next year. In 1925 the union expects to entertain over 100 delegates from ‘all parts of the dominion for the annual convention, and this, of course, cannot he done for nothing. On Saturday night the Tudor Hall looked splendid, with its beautiful decorations of spring flowers and boughs of early blossoms. Evidently the general awakening of Nature was felt by all present. Anyhow, the spirit of revelry was marked, and Ihe dancers enjoyed every minute of what seemed a short evening. The University Women’s Association was very glad to welcome back its chairman, Miss Flora Alim, who had been absent through ill-health, when, on Thursday, the monthly meeting was held. Miss Ride was the speaker for the evening, choosing some of her experiences in America as her subject. She dealt particularly with the universities she had visited, and mentioned that American women had done very much for the higher education of their sex, especially in giving buddings. Pictures illustrative of her remarks we.ro passed round, and then supper concluded a very successful evening. The Otago High School Ex-Girls’ Association was fortunate in hearing bliss Edith Howes give live of her own stories on Monday at the Overseas Club, the occasion being the monthly meeting of this society. Supper and dancing helped to make the evening pass too quickly. bliss Jean Beg", now in Dunedin ibr the conference, was present, and gave a little speech in which she said how glad she was to see so many of her old friends there, bliss Stella Bay Icy, too, was) there, as well as Miss Downes, Miss May, Dr Marion Whyte, and the Misses King. The many friends of Lady Luke will he glad to know that she is in Dunedin, attending the conference of the National Council of Women, and during the day will be found at the Overseas Cl nib. Lady Luke is staying with bliss Beadle, in London street. . The St. Clair Social Club continues to flourish and attract many ladies q£ the district. On Monday Miss Ball and Miss Blyth took charge of a Dickens evening. A paper was first read, and then the famous breach of promise _ case was staged, all the actors being in appropriate costumes. So well done was it that it was really a case of “ laughter holding both his sides.” Those who took part included Mesdames Gamble, W. J. Williams, Fleming, Graham, Maclntyre, Speight, and Pritchard, Misses Bull, Blyth, Baird, end Murdoch. Miss Brown contributed vocal items. The secretary of the Girl Guides has sent me an account of the monthly meet; ing of the executive of the Girl Guide Association held last week. The report showed steady progress of the movement. In each company girls are working for their tests/ and new fiotnpanies are also

being formed. Some of these are in country districts, both Waipiata and Patearoa having linked up with the • Dunedin Association. Mrs H. L. Tapley _ (vice-presi-dent of the association) has joined the Entertainments Committee, and has promised to arrange a bridge drive to raise funds. The president (Lady Ferguson), before hex departure for America, offered a challenge cup, to bo awarded annuallj to the best all-round company. Owing tc absence from Dunedin, Miss Dowmc Stewart is unable to act as vice-president, but has joined the Executive Committee.
