KAIKORAI BATHS

PUBLIC MEETING. Those interested in iho reopening of (ho Kaikorai Swimming Baths and the formation of a playground for the children attended a meeting in the Kaikorai School last evening. Mr J. H. F. Hamel was chairman. Mr Hamel said that the baths were allowed to fall into a state of disrepair after the death cf the custodian. Ho had often seen young men bathing there in spile of (he condition of the place. The city engineer sent a letter, which was read, stating that the cost of repairing the baths would bo £SOO. He thought that the sum was 100 largo, and that a much smaller’ amount would be sufficient to effect the necessary repairs. With regard to the children's playing area, they should ask the help of the City Council. Mr Bell said that the City Council was willing to restore the baths to their former state if the residents would find part of the cost and appoint a caretaker. In his opinion the repairs to the baths should not cost more than £2OO. Mr Mlntosh suggested that the baths be looked after by a returned soldier. He stated that the council had erected two see-saws on the proposed playing area. Cr .1. E. MacManns said he was present in order to get first-hand information. When the matter of closing the baths had come before the council ho had voted against it. He thought that it was a great pity that the playing area had bean left unfinished. It was resolved to refer both subjects to the Ratepayers and Householders’ Association. ««3tramß»9nNno^^
