Bates) supplied the following alt noon to-day : —The indications arc for southerly winds, moderate to strong, and backing by west to south; weather probably cold and changeable ;■ there will probably be a hard frost to-night; barometer has a falling tendency; sea, rough swell on the coast; tides high. SAlLED.—August 18. Kaitaugata, s.s. (9.50 p.m.), 2,005 tons, Corby, for Greymouth. Wingatui, s.s. (10.40 p.m.), 2,3(8 tons Jaunayj for Oamaru, ARRIVED.—August 19. Calm, s.s. (6 a.m.), 892 tons, M’Lachlaji, from Bluff. The Calm arrived early this morning from Bluff, and is to sail at 6 p.m. for Wanganui via ports. The Holm dale is expected on Thursday from Wellington, and sails the same clay for Wanganui via ports. The Wanaka was to leave Auckland today for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, anil Bluff. From the latter port she returns to Dunedin to load for Auckland .da ports. The ,vauri was to sail this afternoon for Tirnnrn to continue discharge of her hardwood cargo from Port Stephens. _ The. Danish motor ship Nordbo sailed late this afternoon for Sydney to complete unloading cargo from Pacific Const ports The A. and A. Line's chartered steamer City of Canton, from New York via New Zealand ports, leaves Lyttelton to-night, ami is due here to-morrow afternoon to continue discharge. From here she proceeds to Melbourne to complete. THE FERRY SERVICE. The Maori, from 'Wellington, arrived at Lyttelton at 6.50 a.m. to-day, and passengers and mails connected with the south express. THE WORLD’S SHIPPING. According to Lloyd’s Register (says the 1 Curarder ’) there are in the world 29,255 steamers and motor vessels of 100 tons and over, the total gross tonnage of these vessels being 61,342,952. Of the steamers and motor vessels, Great Britain and her possessions own 10,263 of 21,615,000 tons, and the United States and possessions 4,331, with a tonnage of 15.808,462. Japan takes third place with 2.026 such vessels, of 3,586.918 tons, and Franco follows with 1,723 vessels of 3,537,382 tons, though these last two positions are reversed if the tonnage of sailing vessels is also considered. There arc stated to-be 4,680 sailing vessels in the world, the gross tonnage totalling 3,128,523. VESSELS IN WIRELESS CALL. The following vessels are expected to be within range of the undermentioned wireless stations to-night Auckland.—Niagara, Sonoma, Dunedin, Ngakuta, Waipori, Kaitoke, Omana, Ka;warra, City of Winchester, Trewyn, Arahura, Wanaka, Karori, Manuka-, Rona, Tielyon, Tofua. Chatham Islands.—Maimoa. Wellington.—Maori, Mararoa, Ngaio, Waihemo, Corinthic, Tahiti. Waitome, Waimana, Canadian Cruiser, Kauri, City of Canton, Westmoreland, Kawatiri, Ulimaroa, Wingatui, Kaimana-wa, Suffolk, Rakauoa, Tremeadow, Kaituna, Largo Law, CORINTHIC FOR HOME. Messrs Dalgety and Co. advise that the departure of the P-haw, Saviil and Albion Line steamer Corinthic from Wcllington for Southampton and London has now been fixed for daybreak on Saturday next THE MAHANA. The Shaw-Savill liner-Mahana is to sail from Liverpool on September 6 with cargo for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She is due at Auckland on October 13 and Wellington on October 20. ROTORUA LEAVES SOUTHAMPTON. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Rotorua left Southampton on August 14 for Wellington and Port Chalmers, and is due at Wellington on September 18. NORWEGIAN SHIPS PURCHASED. The Hammond Steamship Company cf Los Angeles has purchased three Norwegian steamers that were built at the Skinner and Eddy ship_ yards_ in 1917. t The vessels are the Neils Neilsom the Hanna Neilson, and the Luise Neilson. all of 8,800 tons dead-weight. O. AND D. LINE STEAMERS. The Port Auckland, en route from Sydney to London and Liverpool, left Port Kembla on August 8. She will call at Port Lincoln, Wallaroo, and Adelaide. The Port Denison arrived at Melbourne on August 7 from Hull, Hamburg, and London. The Port Lincoln left Port Pino on August 7 for the Continent with a full cargo of concentrates. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
