THE SECTARIAN SHAKE.

TO THE EDITOB.

Sir, —“Wide Awiike” charges the Marist Brothers in Christchurch for being the cause of the League organiser’s intrusion in Dunedin. What a glorious opportunity for introducing the sectarian snake as a smoko screen! I expect “Wide Awake” also blames Mariets for the League’s activities in Auckland and Wellington, as well as other parts of Now Zealand and Australia. Tho writer romombers well for tho pact few yearn tho Dunedin’ Press _ reports of where Loacuo spokesmen visited with a view to finding out liow far the public would bo prepared to support tho League game in Dunedin. Tho Marists wore then playing under the Union code of rules. As a supporter and follower of tho Rugby game, I agree with “ Wide Awake” that Rugby has nothing to fear from a game of League being played hero, as I am convinced that no other codo of football will ever compote seriously with the Rugby game in Dunedin and Otago generally. But should it ever occur that tho League becomes a formidable rival of Rugby in our midst, tho public will only have to thank the Otago Rugby Union—not Marists or their supporters. Tho action of the Canterbury A. and P. Society in notifying the Canterbury Union that it required certain grounds on the same day as Sydney University League players played in Christchurch, to prevent the Canterbury Union from playing a coun-ter-attraction, goes to show that at least a section of the Christchurch people don’t quite agree with their union on all matters. The C.R.F.U.. I maintain, had_ a perfect right to refuse the nee of its grounds to another rival code to play one of its fixtures, but the union’s latest action in taking legal proceedings against the Forbury Trotting Club about a ground that'it does not own is surely the end of the penny section. —I am, etc., Onlookeb.
