PLUNKET SOCIETY

MONTHLY MEETING. Tiie monthly meeting of the commitr tee of the Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children was held in the Plunket office yesterday morning; present —Mesdames Jos. M'George (in the chair), Dove, John Watson, Ounninghame, Cleghorn, Fraser, Clapperton, J. C. M'George, Isaacs, Gallaway, Rattray, Neill, Coleman, Miss Joachim, and the secretary. _ An apology was received from Mrs O’Neill. The hon. treasurer presented the monthly statement of the society’s finances to date, and accounts ncro passed for payment. The matron of the Karitane-Harris Hospital reported for the month of June: Number of patients in hospital on May 31 (mother’s 3, babies 17), 20; number of patients admitted during June (mothers 11, babies 17), 28; number of patients discharged during June (mothers 14, babies 17), 51; number of patients in hospital on June 50 (babies 17), 17; largest number in hospital on any one day (mothers 4, babies 20), 24. One prematuro baby was admitted (a few hours old), weighing 31b. This little baby is doing very well. One mother and baby were admitted from Alexandra, two mothers and babies were admitted from Balclutlia, and eight mothers and babies from Dunedin and suburbs. Six babies were admitted from Dunedin and suburbs. There are sixteen Plunket nurses in training and twelve Karitano nurses. Nurse Naumann commenced a course of Plunket, training daring the month. Karitano Nurse Biss finished her training, and Nurse Swabey commenced a course of Karitane training during the month. Lectures were given by Dr E. H. Williams during the month to the nurses in training. Visitors to the hospital numbered 157. Gifts wore received from the Misses Knight, Hitchcock, and Clare and from the Glendining Home. The Plunket nurses for the north and central districts reported for the month: Number of babies on the list, 605; number of babies breast-fed (including partly), 65 ■ number of new' cases for the month (babies only), 22; number of new babies breast-fed (including partly), 16; number of visits paid to homes, 296; number of visits to Plunket Rooms, Stuart street (adults 275, babies 232), 507; number of visits to Plunket Rooms, Roslyn (adults 75, children 82), 157; advice given to expectant mothers, 6; number of bottles of humanised milk sent out from the Taieri Dairy, 6,257.

The Plunket nurse for the South Dunedin district reported for the month: Number of babies on the list, 338; number of babies breast-fed (including partly), 95; number of new cases for the month (babies only), 20; number of new cases breast-fed (including partly), 17; number of visits paid to homes, 238; number of visits to Plunket Rooms, King Edward street _ (adults 160, babies 152), 312; advice given to expectant mothers, 2. The Plunket nurse for the Anderson Bay district and out-stations reported for the month Number of babies on the list, 214; number of babies breast-fed (including partly), 63; number of new cases for the month (babies only) 9; number of new cases breast-fed (including partly), 8; number of visits paid to homes, 172; number of visits to Plunket Rooms, Stuart street, from Anderson Bay district (adults 31, babies 23), 54; number of visits paid to Plunket Rooms, Port Chalmers (adults 19, babies 21), 40; number of visits paid to Plunket Rooms, Mosgiel (adults 28, babies 25), 53. The following visits were paid to out-stations during the month; Mosgiel 3, Wingatui 1, Abbotsford 4 Green Island 4, Burnside 4, Port Chalmers 4, Sawyers Bay 4, Ravensbourne 5. The Plunket nurses reported that, except for tho prevalence of colds, the general health of the babies was good. It was reported that tho annual meeting of the Dunedin branch would be hold in the Council Chambers on Thursday, the 31st insi, at 4 p.m. Dr Kerens will deliver an address entitled ‘Romo Thoughts on the Development and Future Activities of the Society.’ A draft copy of the annual report was read and approved.
