EXHIBITION CERTIFICATE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—My notice was drawn to a chrcula* issued by the secretary of the proposed Exhibition .soliciting competitive designs for a certificate, the designer of selected certificate to receive the great monetary prize of £lO. Unfortunately, the time for closing the competition is fixed for July 51 prox., so there is no possibility of the recognised first-class designers of Great Britain having an opportunity to compote for such a handsome award unless the High Commissioner has previously been informed by cable to widely advertise the groat £lO competition. I gather that it is necessary to close the competition next month so as to allow time for judging the large number of designs that will bo received. By the way, the. New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation offered the same amount of money for a design of a label to paste on apple boxes. Judging by the Exhibition Committee’s oiler, Uie present Government was outrageously extravagant when it offered £6O for a competitive design for the soldiers’ certificate ; and bow much more extravagant when a New Zealand society paid £IOO for a competitive design ior_a certificate I Therefore, I cannot conceive that the Exhibition Committee or those responsible for fixing the amount of the first prize award expect recognised professional designers to compete. It may be that it is intended for competition only among the children of our public schools. If so, I have nothing more to state; but it would still Ijc advisable to give them somo > information on the circular as to what it is necessary to embody, even if it is only to .state that it must bear the title “Tlw Great New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition.”—! am, etc., E.
