BRITISH HOUSING BILL

REBUFF FOE GOVERNMENT. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright* LONDON, Jane 24. Tbc Government suffered another dafeat in the House of Commons by 315 vot.es to 175, the Liberal combination supporting a motion to refer tho Housing Financial Provisions Bill to a committee of the whole House instead of to a special committee as the Government sought to impose. The defeat, however, was one on procedure and not on principle. No political significance was therefore attached to it, and the other business proceeded. Prior to this incident the Bill, which embodies the financial resolutions in connection with housing, had already passed its second reading after an Opposition motion of reject ion had been defeated Nf 269 votes to 205.

Tho Opposition argued that it was unsound in theory and practice and that its finance was thoroughly had. The Lsbcraia also expressed some discontent, and it was Mr C. F. G. Mastcrman’s raotkfi which ultimately resulted in the Government’s discomfiture.—Reuter.
