The convent of Chilandri, on Mount Athos, built in the Middle Ages, which was recently destroyed by fire, was famous for a most valuable MS. of the Gospels in gold letters on white-vellum, _ probably given by the Emperor Andronicus Cornnenus about 1184, and a treasure chest containing valuable specimens of Serbian ecclesiastical art.
