WARM DISCUSSION ON TOWN MANAGERS LHP.

The fortnightly meeting of the Port Chalmers Council last night was attended hy the, mayor (Mr J. Watson), Crs Anderson, Asher, Cable, M’Lacblan, Love, Allen, Lium, Borric, and Dodds. The Mayor asked the councillors to support a concert by the Returned Soldiers’ Choir, a concert by the Kaikorai Band, and a fund-raising campaign by the Blanket Society. CORRESPONDENCE. P. C. Peters pointed out a blockage of piping near his gate, also an uncleared slip which was letting surface water down tile centre of the road.—Referred to the Works Committee, which, the Chairman said, already had the matter before it. J. Harrliy again asked that the path to 50 Constitution street be asphalted, as this path was covered by yellow clay left thero when a car road over the hill_ was made.—Referred to the Works Committee. REPORTS. The Works Committee reported that the foreman had finished repairing steps and handrail in Meridian street, repaired and tarred part of the paths in Bernicia street and Bellevue place, carted ashes to Harbor terrace, cleared channels at eastern end, also at Deborah Buy beach road, channels cleared in different parts of Die town, water turned off roadways, and that the principal streets and square had received the usual attention; also be had tested drains in George and Beach streets. Tho committee recommended that twenty casks of distilled tar be procured from Christchurch, and that twenty-five sanitary pans h$ procured.—Cr Anderson said that tar from their own gasworks should be used rather than getting it elsewhere. —So far as tarring and sanding of footpaths was concerned, Cr Ijovo thought that, it had in some instances been put on a wet path. The council should try the new patent product for improving tar for asphalting.—Cr Allen said that local tar was no good for the streets, —Cr Borne thought, in view of difference," of opinion, that they should pet a report from Mr Coleman as to local and other tars that had boon used for the streets. — Cr Lunn quoted an instance of tarring which, he said, was money wasted. —Report adopted.
