SCOTTISH CONCERT

'.LTio high standard of merit that is always attained at the Scottish concerts in connection with the piping and dancing competitions was again clemonstraioil last evening, when the second Scottish concert was given. The performers were enthusiastically applauded, almost every item being oncored. Mrs Morrison Macdonald bad to respond to doable encores. The band on tin's occasion was the St. Kilda Brass Hand, which gave two selections. Mr Arthur Macdonald (of Christchurch), in addition to Iris programme numbers (‘ Hail, Caledonia,’ and ‘ The Rebel ’), bad to give two other songs, Mrs D. Carty sang ‘ A!y .Love is Like a Hod, fieri Rose ’ and ’ The Lea Rig ’ in a manner which fully deserved the encores, to which she, gracefully responded with equal .success. In the first part of the programme, Mrs Morrison Macdonald sang ‘ The Scottish Bluebells,’ and in reply to recalls sang two other popular Scottish ballads. In the second portion of the programme she was heard in ‘ Caller i)u, ; and once again had to submit to a double recall. Other items which found favor with the audience were: Songs, ‘Border Ballad ’ and ‘ CJac Bring Tuo Ale,’ by Air A. .Jones; and two numbers, Heels song and story, Ijy Mr George Alcorns, in which there was abundant humor. Mr J. Clark contributed two violin solos, which were thoroughly enjoyed. The dances for the. evening wore: Irish jig, by Leslie M‘Oregon, winner for that event amongst boys from ten to twelve years of age; Highland fling, by Annie Middlemiss, winner amongst'girls under ten ; sword dance, by Eloronoe Miller, winner amongst gills under ten ; and scan triuhhais, by Miss Ulna Gray. Ali.ss Edith Morrison accompanied the singers in a sympathetic manner, and the dance music was supplied by Biper W. A. L. Budge, Another concert will be given tomorrow'’ evening, when an. exceptionally attractive programme will bo provided, and the competitions will bo officially opened by the mayor of the city (Mr H. L. Taploy).
