The weekly meeting of the railway branch of the Workers’ Educational -Association was, notwithstanding the weather, fairly well attended. The subject of the lecture, ‘ Thackeray’s “ Esmond,” ’ with illustrations from ‘ Gulliver's Travels,’ proved to be of great interest, and the readings and extracts from the above works were much appreciated by the class. Tlie sub-headings of the lecture were as follow: —(1) ‘Historical Period,’ including brief accounts of Thackeray and Dean Swift; (2) ‘The Old English Gentry,’ including brief accounts of prominent men of the period ; (3) ‘ Politics of the Seventeenth Century’; (4) questions. After the lecture the usual discussion by members of the class took place..
