WEST HARBOR COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the West Harbor Borough Council: was held last night; present—the Mayor (Mr H. E. Mouer), Crs J. ■ Fraser, A. Smith, C. French, J. W. H. Clarke, J. Kay, J. Robb, F. Mitchell, and W. Barker. The District Engineer of Railways wrote stating that it had been reported by his inspector that the masonry culvert under the road and leading to the railway culvert at railway mileage 232 miles 40 chains (between Burkes and Ravensbourne) was in a bad state of repair, and) required urgent attention. It was feared that if the culvert was not seen to immediately it might cause a slip and blockage of the line. A masonry culvert leading from the drain under the road to the railway culvert at 234 miles 47 chains, near Logan’s Point, also required attention.— The Town Clerk (Mr W. Connor) stated that he could find nothing wrong with the council’s portion of the culvert near Logan’s Point-. The culvert between Burkes and Ravensbourne would receive attention when opportunity offered, GV W. Barker, who is leaving the district, tendered his resignation as chairman of the Works Committee. He then wished to tender his resignation as a councillor. —Tile Mayor accepted his resignation as chairman, but said that Or Barker had sat at the council table for between thirty and forty years, and he had a very thorough knowledge of borough affairs. If he were not living in the district the knowledge he possessed of all the requirements of tho borough would still prove very useful. Mr Moller said that councillors were all of the opinion that Cr Barkershould not resign, and, at the least, he should not take any action for a month,— Cr Barker agreed to fall in with tho mayor's suggestion, The Mayor and Crs Fraser, Smith, Clarke, Kay, and Robb were appointed a sub-committee to go into and revise the borough by-laws.

The town clerk instructed to write to the Government with a view to obtaining a grant- of up to £2OO for damage done to the Main road by the increased motor traffic during the railway strike. Mr F. W. Furkert, chairman of the Main Highways Board, wrote stating that the council’s representations would have the consideration of the board at its May meeting. The Secretary of the Ravensbourne Rugby Football Club wrote applying for tho use of the Rugby football ground during the present season.—The request was granted on the usual terms. The Secretary of the Otago Motor Club wrote adlvising that the council’s letter with regard to speeding by motorists on tho Main road would be laid before the executive at its next meeting.
