CRUISERS IN PORT

VISIT OF COUNTRY' SCHOOLS. 1,100 CHILDREN INSPECT SHIPS. RAIN ALTERS PROGRAMME, The light cruisers Dauntless and Dunedin were visited to-day by over 1,100 school children, who arrived during the morning by trains from the south. Hie weather was wet, unfortunately : but most of tho children appeared to have, taken the precaution of bringing their overcoats with them. Luncheon was provided for them in tho Burns Hall by the Otago Education Board. Owing to the we-t weather, the route march and the party which it was proposed to hold at the Botanic Gardens had to be cancelled. Instead, officers and men from both ships were entertained in the Art Gallery Hall. Afternoon tea was provided, and there was a programme of musical items. The hockey match between naval officers and a local team was also cancelled. A searchlight display was to have been given to-night by 11.M.5. Dauntless : but if tho weather docs not clear this will he postponed in the meantime. SCHOOL CHILDREN’S VISIT. A special train left Clinton at. 8.10 a.m. to-day. and brought school children from the Clinton district and from all schools from Lawrence to Waitahuna. After having lunch at the Burns Hall 254 children from tho following schools inspected the- Dunedin : —Renhnr, Bine Spur, Evans’ Flat, Kaihikn, Lawrence, Manuka Greek, Milton R.C., Southhridge, Stony Creek, Tuapeka Flat, Taumata. Waitahuna, Wait.ahuna Gully, and Waronui. Tho Dauntless was visited by 302 from tho following schools ; —-Awamatigu, Clinton, Kakapuakn. Tokomairiro D.H.S., To Hmika, and Waiwcra. The ordinary train arrived at 10.25 a.m. with children from all tho schools between Milburn and Allanton. The Dunedin was visited by 290 children from the following s<hoots:—Allanton, Moinona, Henley, Otokia, Kaifangatn, Stirling, Milton, and Waihola. A party numbering 291 from the undermentioned schools went on board tho Dauntless : Balclulha, Hillend. Lovell’s Flat, and Tokoiti. After being shown over the vessels the children proceeded to the Burns Hall, where luncheon was provided. RAILWAY ARRANGEMENTS. To-morrow a special train will depart from Oarnaru at 7 a.m., arriving hero at 10.43 a.m., which will bring the children from Oarnaru up to Shag Point _ to the nlimber of about 600. The train will leave Dunedin at 1.50 p.m., and will arrive at Oarnaru at 5.58 p.m. On Monday morning a special train will leave Palmerston at 7.59 a.m., reaching Dunedin at 10.10 a.m., with about, 400 children from schools between Palmerston and Mihiwaka, and they will return hy a train leaving Dunedin at 3.42 p.m., arriving at Palmerston at 6.10 p.m. The pupils of the schools in (ho Gatlins district will be brought in on Tuesday by the usual train which connects at Bah chit ha, and they will arrive here at 10.55 a.m. They will leave again at, 5.15 p.into connect with the Gatlins River train at Balclulha. The children from Outram will arrive at Dunedin on Tuesday hy the ordinary train at 8.49 a.m.. and they will leave again at 4.20 p.m. io connect with the Outram train at Mosgiel. The school children from between Mosgicl and Burnside will be brought in to Dunedin on Tuesday on the train leaving Mosgiel at. 11.10 a.m.. arriving here at 11.41. They will return to their homos hy the train which leaves Dunedin at 4.20 p.m. About 509 children from the schools between Port Chalmers and Ravcnsbourne will he brought info town on 'Wednesday hy the train leaving Port Chalmers at 9!35 a.m., which arrives here at 10.5 a.in. Thov will leave Dunedin again at 12.10 p.m. Ihe parents of children will not be allmve 1 to travel on these special trains, which arc exclusively for the children, tho teacners and the members -of school committees iu charge. MOTOR, CLUE’S OUTING.

About I'LM officers and men will he taken for an outing on Sunday by the Otago Motor Club. The cars will leave the wharf at halfpast. 1, and will travel via Roslyn and the Kaikond to Mosgiel and the Taievi. Tim visitors will ho entertained by the mayor artl residents of Mosgiel. and it is expected that Dunedin will he reached on the return about 5 p.m. A large number of car owners have promised to attend, but the club requires a few more cars. Any owner willing to take, part, in the outing is requested to communicate with the sen ctary of the club (Air P. D. Power) OTHER FIXTURES.

To-night a swimming carnival will be held in Die municipal baths, and the crack swimmers from the ships will compete aramst- oin local champions. In the Tudor Hall a civic dinner will he tendered to (he captains and officers of the warships. , , To-morrow afternoon an official at home'’ will he given on H.M.S. Dunedin, and music will he supplied by one of the ship's bands. Association and Rugby football matches will he played between teams from the shim and local teams. In the evening the controlling bodies will entertain Inc teams at dinner, and a smoke social will follow, H-M.S. DUNEDIN. plea for retention of name. The statement that H.M.S. Dunedin will shortlv have hoc name changed to that of New Zealand has received a great deal of local comment, and the feeling is receiving vocal expression that the ships name slinnld remain, as it is keeping her in tier appropriate class. The name New Zealand is now an honored one on the Naw List, and her history deserves that the next, shin to hear that title should be a capital slap-one. worthy of taking her place in the line should such dread arbitrament over he necessary. This question was pul before the Expansion League, and the. following telegram has been sent to the Prime Minister by the secretary (Air W. B. Steel) . “SI roue representation? being made here that name of H.M.S. Dunedin should not ho (banged. Feeling is that vessel should remain in her own class, and the honored name of New Zealand given to succeeding bailie cruiser worthy of her record. Will you make suggestion to Admiralty if you deem such course advisable.” _____ NAVAL SWIMMING CARNIVAL. The swimming gala to be held in the tepid baths to-night is part of the civic eiuerlainnient programme arranged by the mayor. Very ’ al '6° entries, both from the Dauntless and Dunedin and also from local swimmers, have been received. Goodman, the naval champion, is taking part, and is sure to give a good account of himself. The features of the programme aro tho 400yds, six-men-team relay (five teams entered), and the water polo match Fleet v. Otago. The carnival starts at 7.45 10-night.
