Mrs Johnstone presided nt tho monthly meeting this morning of the committee of tho Royal Now Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children.

MATRON'S .REPORT

Tho matron of tho Karitane-llarris Hospital reported fur month of Eebrttarv:—Number of patients in hospital on January 31 (mothers -1, babies 14), 18; number of patients admitted for treatment (mothers 11, babies 22), 33; number of patients discharged (mothers 11, babies 19), 30; number of patients in hospital on Fobrnarv 29 (mothers -I, babies Ji), 21; largest number ;n on any one day (mothers 3, babies ID), 22. Of too eleven mothers and ha Ides admitted during the month., fl ireo were in hospital for twenty-four hours’ tost weighing. One came from Onmani, ojio' from Wellington, and one from ■ Palmerston; the remaining eight came from Dunedin and suburbs. Of tin- babies admitted, one came from Clinton, one from Mosgiel, twins from Arrowtown, and tho remain.ag eighteen from Dunedin and suburbs. One, baby who was admitted in an emaciated condition, and not expected to recover, has responded to treatment, and is now gaining weignt steadily. There arc sixteen Plnnket nurses at present in training. Nurses Gudgeon and Kdinger commenced a course of training during the mn.r.h. Them are eleven Karitnno nurses in training. Port Chalmers ■!. The nurses reported that there were a few eases of summer sickness among the babies, but their general health was good, GENERAL. The resignation of Nurse Ellis (outstations district) was accepted with regret. Nurse Ellis will terminate her duties on April 23, having been appointed to the Plnnket nursing stall of tho Hastings lira noli of tho society. Arrangement.-, were made lor members of the Taieri sub-branch to visit tho Karitane-Harris Hospital on .Saturday afternoon, April 6. A letter was received from the Young Women's Christian Association asking tho society to assist in the musical programme which is being arranged for a concert on the occasion of the opening of tHeir new hall.—lt ,va> decided, if possible, to comply with the request. The President reported that a public meeting of citizens is being convened In- the mavor. The object of this mooting. which will ho held next Friday evening (28th - inst.), is to stimulate the interest of the general public in the work which is being done Jor tho mothers and babies by the Karitanellarris Hospital and the Plnnket nurses. It is hoped that there will be a large and sympathetic gathering, and that Ike meeting will receive tho support it merits from all sections of tho community.
