A novel departure from custom has been made at the National Gallery, London, where for a short time Titian’s ' Venus and Adonis ’ will bo »hown in a half-repaired condition. The pioturo had long- been considered to be little more than a studio repetition of one at Madrid. removal of the varnish, however, indicates that it is a first experimental version olf the subject by tha master himself, and therefore exhibits Titian’s stylo in .the transition period between the ‘Bacchus and Ariadne’ and the hardily loss famous ‘Mother and Child’ in. the Mondi collection.
