BANKRUPTCY RETURNS

LAST YEAR'S FIGURES. The official bankruptcy returns for the Otago and Southland districts for last year, as furnished by Mr W. W. Samson (official assignee) and the deputy-assistant assignees at Invercargill and Oamaru, show that the number of bankruptcies totalled forty-four, as against forty-three in 1922, and thirty in 1921. The number of farmer bankrupts was eighteen, the same number as in 1922. Amongst the others, agents and laborers predominated. Number of bankruptcies, 26 (25); assets as per statement filed, £5,654 Os 4d (£4,686 2s sd); amounts secured to creditors, £37,379 8s 2d (£39,503 10s); liabilities as per statements filed, £16,635 9s 6d (£16,799 3s); amount of assets realised, £4,675 8s 3d (£3,819 7s 4d); amount of debts proved, £15,974 11s 5d (£19,177 15s 3d); amount paid in dividends, £2,594 6s lid (£3,517 8s 8d); amount paid as preferential claims, £357 11s 5d (£293 11s 6d).
