As a mark of esteem for the Rov. H. S. Bishop, vicar of Holy Trinity Church, the friendly societies of Port Chalmers held a combined church parade yesterday evening. Meeting at the Druids Hall, the members of the various lodges wore marshalled bv Bro. J. Craig, G.M.C., and marched to the church, preceded by tho District High School Band, in charge of Mr G. F. Booth (rector). Preaching from the text, “ Love worketh no ill to his neighbor; therefore love was the fulfilling of the law” (Romans jdii., 10), the Rev. Mr Bishop explained that the friendliness and co-operation put into practice by friendly societies gradually led to tho” wider point of view and the recognition that the cohesive force behind all movements for tho bettering of mankind was the love of Jesus Christ. That love was a living active force, as had been experienced at the healing mission during the previous wce.k. After’ the service tho friendly society members repaired to their hall, and before dispersing they were reminded by Bro. W. B. Steel, G.S., that a combined parade showed definitely that friendliness and concord was tho objective of friendly societies. Tho Rev. Mr Bishop is leaving Port Chalmers next month for Queenstown Our Invercargill correspondent wires that after nearly six weeks’ dry spell a good rain fell last night throughout the province, which will be of much benefit to farmers. Bees recently took possession of a pastry shop in Paris, customers and assistants dashing wildly out at the appearance of the swarm. The invasion lasted three hours in spite of all efforts to clear the place.
