PLUNKET NURSES IN JAFFA

VALUABLE EDUCATIONAL WOES* [Pee United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, December 10. About three years ago the Jewish women of New Zealand raised money to establish two welfare centres in Jaffa with Plunket nurses in charge. Mrs David Nathan today returned from visiting Palestine, where she saw the centres working. The restdts have been more than satisfactory. The American welfare centres decided to adopt the Plunket system in their work. “ The people of Jerusalem,” Mrs Nathan says, “ know little of tho methods necessary to preserve infant life. The mortality among the children is as high as 40 per cent, in Tiberias. The only preventive methods used aro amulets against ‘ the evil eye.’ Tho Plunket nurses in Jaffa are doing valuable educational work. The local women are assisting in many ways. There are 5,000 babies in Jaffa, and there have been no deaths during tho last two years. It is hoped that Australia will follow the example of New Zealand and take a practical interest in the welfare work in Jerusalem,”
