There had been three very good performances that evening. Miss ihiaseo was a very musical girl, and had shown good style and intonation. Tho second prize taker Had made two unfortunate starts, but he had shown up excellently in the slow portion in the middle of the piece. The third prize winner had shown nice style.

(b) Ballad (own selection).

Mr Douglas Craigie (Dunedin), 271 1 Mr W. J. Renton (Mornington), 269 ... 2 Mr Walter Mitchell (St. Hilda], 263 ... 3

Also competed: Mr Arthur J. Lnnglcy (Dunedin) 254. This contest comprised two sections, operatic air and ballad. The points awarded are the aggregate for the two. The judge said that this had been a rather small class. He suggested that competitors in tho operatic section should give thought to their song, as they frequently overweighted themselves. Ho could 'have suggested many better songs than had been given. Ono competitor had sung two ballads, and be considered that there should ho a distinction between tho two numbers selected- Tho winner had brought out the humor in hk comic opera selection, bub ho (tho adjudicator) was not impressed with the quality of his voice, which was harsh. This fault, however, could bo overcome. Tho winner scored 155 points in the operatic air and 136 in tho ballad. The second prize winner had a good voice, but did not seem to get it out properly. Ho had been a little dull. Tho enunciation of Mr Mitchell was bad, and tho competitor was evidently suffering from a very bad cold. ELOCUTION. Judge : Mr W. L. I’aino (Melbourne). Ho wished to compliment Mrs Gair, who had displayed the tmo spirit of tho piece, and she had the abandon that was absolutely necessary. Her view of certain passages, lie thought, was rather serious. Miss Winkel had displayed tho right spirit, but. she was erratic and lacked the body responsiveness shown by Mrs Gair. Miss Vyner commented tliat on the whole tho perfonnarices we.ro very rnijed. Several mistakes had been made in setting, and she thought that teachers could largely avoid this by using their imagination. Some of t-lio dances had boon well arranged, and (here was not. so much monotonous running about them as she had found in the earlier sections. -She considered that there should be an entirely separate section for Eastern dancing. Tho winner had shown good h'g movements, whilst her arms wore supple. The time was good, but she thought that a little more might have been made of the arrangement. Miss Phyllis Christie had given a good interpretation, but her knees had not been kept straight, DRAAL-mC DUO, 12 and over. She considered that the dances wore rather beyond the dramatic powers of the competitors. The (eg movements of the winners were good, but too much time had been taken by the second pair in unnecessary action, ‘
