ST. KILDA COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the St. Kilda Borough Council, held last evening,-was attended by the mayor (Mr C. Todd), Crs J. W. Dove, R. Telfer, E. Longworth, J. Adam, R. M. Mercer, H. H. Leary, J. Fleming, A. Kilpatrick, and A. D. Edgar. STREET BOUNDARIES. In accordance with notice, Cr Longworth moved—“ That the resolution passed by the council on June 25, authorising the town clerk |';o instruct Mr Loan to adhere to the correct building line on part allotment 6. Township of "Newmarket, be rescinded.” Mr Leary seconded the motion. After discussion, the motion was lost, three voting for and six against. Cr Longworth then moved—“ That the residents on the corner of Cough trey street bo notified that their fences will bo moved back to the proper lino in the near future.”

Cr Edgar seconded the motion. Cr Dove rose to a point of order. Tho motion had come as a. surprise, and he was of the opinion that notice should bo given in writing. Tho -Mayor said it was a full meeting of tho council, and Or Longworth’s motion had not come altogether <l3 a surprise. ’ Cr Dove said it, was a very important matter, and would entail very considerable expense. Ho thought that, the councillors should he given an opportunity of looking into the matter.

Tho Mayor said he was of the opinion that Cr Longworth should withdraw his motion.

Cr Longworth agreed, and then moved—- “ That the town clerk prepare, a. report as to tho boundaries of the sections from Cough trey street to Eorhury road.”

Cr Edgar seconded tho motion, which was) carried.

On tho motion of Cr Edgar, seconded hy Cr Lnnpworth, it was decided that the St. Kilda, Methodist Church Trust Board he approached as to the conditions under which it would dispose of portion of its properly in front of the church, with a view to making tho corner of High street and the Qtiben’s Drive safer for traffic, STREET SPOIT,, Mr H. H. Burrow, of Prince Albert road, wrote applying for any surplus material from tho excavation in New street, or any other excavations, for tho purpose of filling in his section in Prince Albert road. Cr Fleming suggested that any spoil left over should bo taken by the council for the purpose of building up Culling Park. , The Mayor said that he was not aware that there was such an immediate necessity for filling in Culling Park.

Or Dove said that the council should do everything in its power to build up tho sides in Culling Park in order that it might become an ideal sports ground, both from the players’ and tho spectators’ point of view. It was decided to leave tho matter in the hands of the Works Committee (comprising the mayor and Crs Dove and Kilpatrick), with a view of inspecting the streets where the spoil lay and seeing what amount was available. GENERAL.

It was decided to grant the free use of the Coronation Hall to the Court King Edward Pride, A.0.P., for the purpose of holding a concert on the evening of- August 2 in aid of a St. Kilda resident who had suffered a bereavement (Juring tho present influenza epidemic. Tho Clerk of the Musselburgh School Committee wrote asking tho council to repair that portion of Fergusson street beyond tho quarry. It was pointed' out that thus street was one of tho main avenues ■of approach lo tho school from the Bay and Tallin! districts.—The Town Clerk reported that the portion of the street referred lo had been attended to, and the letter was received. A letter was received from tho secretary of the St. Kilda Fire Brigade, inviting the mayor and councillors to attend the annual meeting of the brigade lo be held on Monday evening, August 6.—Tho invitation was accepted. Tim matter of (ho proposed St. Kilda Fire Board was discussed in committee.
