RUSH TO THE STATES

AUTHORITIES IN DIFFICULTIES,

Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright.

NEW YORK, July 22

Some idea of the problem sot the United Stales in coping with the enforcement of the immigration law can be gained from the fact that 28.000 immigrants have been admitted to Ellis Island alone during the first three weeks of July. A hundred inspectors worked day and night subjecting the incomers to a minute examination. Twelve hundred immigrants, a considerable number of whom are British, have been detained ponding the decision of the Washington authorities on their case. The larger number of these will be deported. Owing to the large number of arrivals and the limited accommodation, many immigrants suffer great discomforts, especially recently during the prolonged' bent spell, despite the efforts of officials to reduce suffering to a minimum.—A. and N.Z. Cable.

[Tito present immigration law of the. United States provides that the number of aliens of any nationality who may ho admitted into the United' States in any fiscal year must be limited to 5 per cent, of the number of foreign-born persons of such nationality resident in the United States as shown by the census of 1910. It is a temporary law, in force until Juno 30, 1924. There is n widespread impression that under this 3 per cent. law little more than a quarter of a million immigrants can enter the United States in a rear. But on this point Kenneth L. Roberts, writing in the ‘Saturday Evening Post.’ strifes; “During the yen/ that ended June 30, 1922. matter of 243.000 immigrants were admitted to the United States under the percentage law. During the year ended June 30, 1923, heemiso of the fact that the countries <lf Northern and Western Europe will nearly fill their quotas, the number admitted under the 3 per cent, law will be over 3C0.000. And for the year after that—the year ending Juno 30, 1924—there is little elouhe that the number to enter the United States under the percentage law will he 357,000, or the full quota from every European country.”] |
