AMERICA AND AUSTRALIA

COMMONWEALTH’S COMMISSIONER,

NEW YORK, July 6. The new Australian Commissioner to tho United States (Mr Donald Mackinnon) arrived with his family to-day, and took up his duties. Mr Mackinnon said ho had a cordial reception in Canada, and had found a strong feeling in favor of a Canada-Aus-tralia preference. Part of his duty was to inform tho Australian Government where offices should bo situated. Ho was of opinion that at present, since Australian interests in America were largely commercial, his energies should be concentrated in the commercial centre —Now York — which was also more convenient for Australian travellers and would enable him to keep in close touch with tho financial centre—Wall street. It was his belie! that the British dominions could make a bettor presentation of international matters through one authoriy rather than through separate representatives. In a few days Mr Mackinnon will go to Washington‘to present his credentials to the State Department. Then ho will visit tho cotton and tobacco-growing areas in order to advise the Australian Government concerning developments applicable to tho ■Commonwealth. Later on ho will investigate other American rural industries which may bo suitable for introduction into Australia.
