In-fighting followed. ftiWon:-' boxing vv©il ( and the champion having trouble in hitting him. In round five Gibbons drove Dempsey back, knocking him to the ropes with two lefts to tho jaw. Dempsey kept clinching, but Gibbons again drove him back. In round six Dempsey knocked Gibbons between the ropes as came out of a clinch, Gibbons protesting. Dempsey gave him severe punishment at close quartern!, which he continually sought. In round seven the crowd became angry, as Dempsey held and hit, and then twice hit' Gibbons below tho belt without tho referee protesting. In round eight Gibbons rocked Dempsey with two lefts to the jaw. Dempsey hit low, and the crowd resented it. The round ended with an exchange of bead blows. Round nine was a series of clinches. Gibbons was distinctly outboxing the champion and standing body punishment well. He also landed several hard blows to the jaw. In round ton Gibbons improved in • clinches, and also neatly dodged Dempsey’s upper-cuts and straight hits. Round eleven saw Dempsey outmanoeuvred. and he again struck below the belt. Tho crowd was furious. Gibbons retaliated with two hard blows to the jaw, and dodged Dempsey’s counter. (Received July 5, at 1 p.m.) Round 12 was marked by savage in-fighting, Dempsey roughing it all over the ring, and striking low. In round 13 Gibbons, outguessing Dempsey, dodged terriffio upper cuts. The challenger, boxing beautifully, forced Dempsey to miss repeatedly. Round 14 saw Dempsey tiring. He missed continually at long range, and | sought to got close. Gibbons’s generalship was far superior. In round 15 Gibbons was now strictly on the defensive. Dempsey was desperately trying for a knock-out. He landed on the jaw, sadly shaking Gibbons; but the bell then sounded. Tire referee’s decision was in Dempsey’s favor. The wildest excitement followed tho fight.
