MODERN ART

THIS YEAR’S ACADEMY,

LONDON, May 1,

The tendency continues towards modernism at the Royal Academy this year. The late Sir James Shannon’s portraits are surprisingly good. _ They were painted while he was sitting in a hath chair, following a riding accident. The finest of Sir William Orpen’s_ portraits is that of Lord Berkeley, wearing a yellow hunting costume. Mr Bernard Hall, of Melbourne, shows an excellent portrait of Sir Robert Garran, pipe in hand. Mr George Oakeshott's sketch of the Australian pavilion at Wembley is dignified and simple. Sir Bertram Mackennal’s war memorial for Eton College is a masterly work.
