CHESS CLUB
The thirty-eighth annual meeting of the Otago Chess Club was held last evening, Mr T. M. Gillies (president) occupying the chair.
In moving the adoption of tho annual report and balance-sheet, tho Chairman congratulated the club on its successful year, as evidenced by the larger attendances on play nights and also by tho increased membership, particularly of junior players, and this had resulted from the match held early in the season between the masters and pupils of the Otago Boys’ High School and tho club. He trusted that this match would be made an annual fixture. The telegraphic matches had been keenly contested, the club having had only one loss. He congratulated Mr A. W. 0. Davies on his performance at the Australian championship meeting held at Melbourne, and also Mr J. B. Dunlop on winning the New Zealand championship for the third time in succession. Ho commented on the satisfactory position of the club’s finances, and thankee! tho secretary (Mr A. G. Qrabham) and tho committee for their hearty support during the year. He especially thanked Mr D, Harris Eastings, the" oldest member of tho club and secretary for many years, for the willing services he had rendered in the interests of the members,, and suggested that as a special mark of appreciation he should ho made a life member. (This was subsequently carried with acclamation.) The report, he said, made special reference to the loss the club had sustained through the death of Mr J. Edwards, a former champion of the club and also of New Zealand. Regret was also expressed at the resignation of Mr W. P. Morrell, who was shortly proceeding to England, and he was spirally thanked for his services as librarian. Mr G. D. Wrig*ht seconded tho motion, which was carried. The election of officers for tho ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Mr E. J. Penrose; senior vice-president, Mr A. W. 0. Davies; junior vice-president, Mr J. S. Lawson; secretary, Mr A. G. Grabham; assistant secretary, Mr W. T. Griffin 1 .; treasurer, (Mr W. H. Allen ; committee —Messrs J. C. M’Orea, S. S. Myers, 0. Balk, D. Harris Hastings, L. Grigg, W. Bridgman, and G. D. Wright; Iron, solicitor, Mr J. Lang: Iron, auditor. Mr G. D. Wright: librarian, Mr F. M’Caskill. It was decided to open the season on Monday, May 7.
