MILTON BADLY FLOODED
WATER IN THE MILLS. A NARROW ESCAPE. TRAP WASHED OFF ROAD. [Special to the ‘Star.’] MILTON, April 23. The heavy rains throughout Sunday and last night caused an unprecedented flood in Milton and district. The town in the southern portion was flooded in places to a depth of 2ft, and many residences were inundated. The main street was flooded for about 400yds from the river, and all low-lying property was submerged. The Bruce Woollen Mills loom room, hosiery department, and warehouse were flooded to a depth of din this morning, and Hitchon’s bacon factory to a depth of 2ft. Several culverts are renortea to Bruce County Council as having been washed out, and small bridges have been completely washed away. The water was over the railway line at the bridge beyond the southern end of Milton railway station, and Clarksville railway platform was submerged. A resident named John Moore, had a narrow escape from drowning, his horse and cart being washed off the main road, but Mr Moore managed to catch hold of some trees in a hedge, and was eventually rescued by means of a boat.
