LANDSLIDE IN WILKIE ROAD
HOUSE SHIFTED OVER 20ft. A land slide on the hill side of Wilkie road occurred with startling suddenness last evening behind a house occupied by Mr Jack Scott and l owned by Mr George Brooks, of Green Island. Ominous shakings caused Mr Scott to gel his family out of the front, the children being taken through the windows. He was only just in time, as a minute later the structure was thrown forward over 20ft. Windows were broken, chimneys fell heavily, and the whole frame was badly buckled, while one corner was thrown up against the wall of the house next door and causing some damage to things there. A good deal of Mr Scott's crockery and furniture was broken and badly damaged, and he estimates his loss at over ±l2O. This morning the. furniture was being busily removed to a friend’s place. The appearance of the place reminded a “ digger ” of houses in Franco that had been badly battered by shell fire. BOTANICAL GARDENS. LITTLE DAMAGE DON 3. Mr D. Tannock (superintendent of reserves) informed a reporter that practically no damage had been done to the Botanical Gardens. In one or two places the paths were scooped out a little by the flood waters. A light bridge at the end of the rockery gave way at one end and waj twisted around, but fortunately was not washed away. POLICE EFFORTS PRAISED. Residents of South Dunedin and Kensington speak highly of the conduct of Sergeant .Murray and constables of the South Dunedin police. They were out all night assisting the people who had suffered to places of safety and putting furniture out of harm’s way. Some members of the force, indeed, took people to their own homes for the night.
