TO THE ELECTORS OF THE CITY OF DUNEDIN. DEAR SIR OR MADAM,As a candidate for the position of Councillor for your City, it affords me great pleasure in placing before you tho main features whv I have interested myself in municipal affairs'That the present Council has not been progressive during the last six years, and it must be duo te their nonadministrativo ability in n6t having put down one mile of new tram lines, hut taken up the loop to Carisbrook. I am in favor ot immediate lines being put down at once—ono to Maori Hill via Pitt street; one to Tomahawk via Anderson’s Bay or Tahuna; the removal of the line Howe street to Duko street, and thence on to the Leith Valley; a line to Opoho, where there are sixty acres to build upon; also a lino to Waverley. The immediate building of workers’ homes, taking onr population, which is at present somewhere about seventy thousand, and allowing for births, deaths, and immigration; only halving it, wo would require six hundred houses a year built to cope with tho wants of tho people. I am responsible to the City Council for some ono hundred and fifty pounds a year in rates, showing that my interests are identical with everyone wha»j owns a house qr wants to procure one for himself; and, what is more, we want a Fair Rent Bill for the City of Dunedin, and not to bo exploited by tho landlord system. I have had the practical experience in the maintenance of roads and the value of houses and land. The ‘ Otago Daily Times,’ in its leading article, gives great kudos to tho retiring councillors, showing tho profits of the trading concerns of the municipality; but how much more has been lost in the administration of those concerns? If entrusted with a seat on the Council, I will prove that I am capable and progressive; therefore I solicit your Vote and Interest on THURSDAY Next. Yours obediently, HENRY WALTON PHILLIPS. MUNICIPAL ELECTION. Ladies and gentlemen,—Although unsuccessful two years ago, I again offer you my services, and, if elected, will endeavor to serve you to tho best of my ability. The following summarises my views: 1. As to tho electric cars, the incoming Council should take into consideration tho question of altering the present startingplaoe in the centre of the City. With congested traffic, it is becoming a source of grave danger that tho starting-places should be where they are. 2. Tho office for the sale of tram tickets should bo kept open later. 3. Shelter sheds should be erected at the end of each terminus for waiting passengers, where not already erected. 4. A competent engineer should be appointed to take charge of our cable trams and have solo control of tho same. 5. Extensions should, bo taken into consideration, such as Momington lino to Kenmure road, a line up Pitt street terminating at Maori Hill, Elgin road electrification” Caversham extension to Corstorphine. 6. Control of all street traffic should be placed in the hands of the police. 7. Certain streets should be allocated for the parking of motors. 8. All owners of motor cars not carrying a Dunedin or local register after a lapse of three months should be compelled to register. 1 9. With regard to playing areas, in future it should be the fixed policy of the municipabty to see that sufficient space is pro* vided, where future building takes place for a playing area for that district. ’ 10. So far the Municipal Pish Market has not materialised, and as it has not been at all successful as a paying proposition in Auckland, my opinion is that it would be advisable to leave well alone. Yours, HERBERT A. LE CREN. TO ST. KILDA ELECTORS. AS a Candidate for tie Council, I wish XX you to know that 1 was the first to introduce the burning question of Amalgamation, which was immediately taken up by Mr Aslin and others. We wore stigmatised by those opposing as Gore, Aslin, and Co. Anyone reading that correspondence, which lasted some weeks, must have come to the' conclusion that I knew something of muni- I cipal a Iran s. At that tinis I was requested j to allow myself to bo nominated, but for! economic reasons I had to decline. I liavo boon a Ratepayer in St. Kilda for twenty-five and in the City for nearly, fifty years, have always taken a great inter-! list in municipal affairs, have been a Student in the W.E.A, on Economics. I also stood for tho City Council, Hospital and Charitable Aid Board at tho last Election, and polled tho second highest number of votes amorm tho Labor Candidates, and if elected I will do my best in the interests of the Ratepayers.
