POST-GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

DISTINGUISHED OTAGO STUDENT. AITKEN'S CAREER. [Special to tub ‘Star.’] CHEISTCHURCH, April 20. At to-day’s sitting of tho Now Zealand University Senate the post-graduato scholarship in Arts was awarded to A. C. Aitken, of Otago University. Aiikoa was first on the Junior National Scholarship list in 1912. 110 was on active service from 1915 to 1917, and completed the final of the B.A. degree in 1918, when he was awarded a senior scholarship in Latin. Ho also qualified for the scholarship in mathematics. In 1919 ho gained first class honors in languages and literature, and second class honors in mathematics. Aitken, who is at present on the staff of the Otago Boys’ High School, intends to proceed to Edinburgh University to do research work in mathematics. The annual value of tho post-graduate scholarship in Arts is £2OO, and it is tenable for two years. These scholarships are intended, not to facilitate attendance at ordinary collegiate studies, but to enable students wtio have passed through a college curriculum and have given distinct evidence of capacity for post-graduate work, to continue their advanced studies in some other university approved by the .Senate. Candidates must have passed tho examination for honors not more than three years before the date of entry. Tho scholarship is awarded by the Senate after consideration of reports from tiny Professorial Board of the respective colleges, together with the reports of the Homo examiners for honors, who are required to indicate, for the information of the Senate, those candidates who, judged by tho character of their examination work, are worthy of holding such a scholarship. G. E. Beeby, of Canterbury College, has been awarded ft senior University scliolarship in philosophy. Beeby is at present assistant to the professors of philosophy and education at Canterbury College.
