■ -«>- The Governor-General (Viscount Jellicoe) and Lady Jellicoc, who are the guests of Dr and Airs Undo Ferguson, did not have any official engagements to-day. Tonight His Excellency will confer the honors at an investiture of the local branch of the St. John Ambulance, and will afterwards visit the Otago Officers’ Chib in Moray Place. To-morrow morning tho Governor-General will pay a visit to the Returned Soldiers’ Club.
The medical superintendent of the. Dunedin Hospital (Dr Falconer) was lasi night grunted six months’ leave of absence, from July to December, to enable him to visit America.
The- High Schools’ Hoard of Governors decided, at its meeting yesterdayto record its appreciation of the keen interest taken by the mayor (Mr J. S. Douglas) in the affairs of the board during his term of office as a member.

Saiinneis cook occasion to make a few complimentary remarks in reference to Mr W. Cemmeli’s term as conductor, ami also to the happy relations existing. He also took the opportunity of introducing Mr John Leech, who will take the baton during Mr Gemmed’? absence, in Australia until the close of the year. Owing to altered circumstances Mr Cellin',dl '’will not now leave until Monday morning to join the Vancouver boat from Auckland to Sydney. Mr L. D. Browett, officer in charge ot the Labor Department in Dunedin for about eleven years, will retire on superannuation next month. He entered the service of the department at Christchurch thirty years ago. and was successively in charge.‘of the Hawke’s Bay, Southland, and Otago districts, while at various intervals ho has served in the head office in Wellington, relieving the deputy chief of staff. He has been a great success ns a departmental officer, for ho knows his work thoroughly, possesses special qualifications for the preparation of court cases, and has displayed _ rare discretion and a keen sense of justice in the handling of his daily problems as between employer and employed. Mr G. H. Lightfoot, who i 3 to succeed Mr .Biowefct, served at -Ashburton, Timaxu, and Invercargill, was then made inspector at the head office, and subsequently became officer in charge rt Auckland.
