OTAGO LABOR COUNCIL

PROPOSED DOMINION FEDERATION. A meeting of the Otago Labor Council was held last night, Mr C. L. Campbell (president) being in the_ chair. _ . The Returned Soldiers* Association wrote inviting Hie council to send representatives to the memorial service to be held in His Majesty’s Theatre on the afternoon of Anzac Day. Messrs H. V. Freeman and J. Haymes were appointed to represent the council. A letter was received from the New Zealand Workers’ Union requesting the council to receive Mr E. J. lies, the engineer of the proposed scheme to dam the Kawarau River, with a view to obtaining the council’s support in the matter. —It was resolved to hear Mr lies at the meeting of the council on May 3. Mr Hiram Hunter, the workers’ represputa five on the Arbitration Court, wrote requesting to meet delegates of tho council when in Dunedin, and it was agreed to receive him at the meeting on May_3. The report of the committee appointed to consider the proposed Apprentices and Vocational Training Bill, 1923, was submitted to the council for approval, and, with one or two small amendments, was adopted.—-Mr R. Ferguson was appointed to represent the council at tho conference to be held at Wellington 5n April 26 under ihe auspices of tho Labor ment, and to submit the council’s proposed amendments to the Bill. Mr H. V. Freeman, who attended as the council’s representative at the recent conference in Wellington to discuss the proposal to form a federation of trade councils, submitted a report. His remarks were to the effect that, after inviting the Alliance of Labor to forward any suggestions, the conference decided that the actual establishment of the federation should be proceeded with within a limited time (not to exceed three weeks from the date of the conference).
