EDUCATION BOARD

YESTERDAY’S MEETING. Tho usual meeting of the Otago Education Board was held yesterday morning, when there were present —Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), J. Horn, M.P., Smith, Saunderson, Lawrence, Todd, Livingstone, Wilkinson. Wood, and Hon. D. T. Fleming. ARCHITECT’S RECOMMENDATIONS.

Tho following matters were reported upon by the architect: — Arthur Street.—School Committee’s modified application for remodelling of Standard VI. room : Architect reported that what was asked was improved lighting and ventilation, level floors, and painting of room. With improved system of heating the cost of tho foregoing would be about £22o.—Resolved to ‘ inform the department of the rnmmittee’s offer of £SO and ask for a grant. Port Chalmers.—Cookery room ; Architect recommended repairs to range and gas pipes; new stove, gas ring, and urn recommended ; total cost £24.—Approved. Owaka.—Committee’s application for painting of school: Architect reported that this must stand over till next season. —Approved. Waitahuna Cully.—Architect asked for instructions regarding amount that might be expended on repairs and improvements. —Held ever till next year. Training College.—Office for Miss Landreth, homo science teacher: Architect reported that the only course was to partition off a portion of the science class room, as recommended by Mr Moore; cost about £l4.—Approved. Macandrew Road.—Head teacher’s requisites for infant room : Architect reported cost would bo £25 19s 3d. —Approved. Waipori Falls; Committee applied again for now lavatories ; Architect considered this an urgent matter, and recommended that board’s visit be paid and improvements arranged for at an early date. —Left in hands of city members. Inch Valley.—Architect recommended supply of piping and drain pipes for drainage from residence; cost about £2.—Approved. Otiako— Committee’s application for half cost of erecting fence between school ground and teacher’s glebe; half cost (about £8) was previously sanctioned, but architect, after visiting, noted that the fence has been erected by the teacher with old material found upon the ground; twelve new posts were needed, and extra wire; cost about £3. He recommended this payment in place of spending £l6. Approved. Waitahuna.—Teacher asked permission to install in residence an Alpha petrol lighting system : Architect recommended that permission be granted.—Approved. Hillend.—Architect recommended that the drain from the school property he extended, and permission asked from ;ho County Council to open the road to take the pipes across the roadway (cost about £l2). —Approved. Beaumont—Topping of trees round school grounds : Architect recommended grant of £3 instead of £5 asked by committee.—Approved. Milburn.—Architect recommended that subsidy be granted for asphalting an area round the school (probable cost about £6O). —Granted on usual conditions._ Shag Point. —Committee’s application for painting interior of schoolroom not recommended at present. —Approved, Awamoko. —Architect recommended supply of new blinds for school and two new blackboards (cost £7 2s 6d).— Approved. Kakanui.— Committee’s application for material for now paling and picket fence : Architect recommended repairs to front and side fences (cost about £5) and expenditure of £24 on residence,—Approved. . , . Port Chalmers.—Committee s application for new batli for janitor’s house : Architect recommended same (cost about -j4 10a).—Approved. . , Evan’s Flat.—Committee s application for painting of ball : Architect did not recommend, but thought tno ball should be removed, as it was infested with the borer and was a menace to the other buildings.—Decided to tbo hall if the committee did not repair it. North-east Harbor.— Architect recommended supply of fencing material, and also repairs to downpipes (cost about £4). —Approved. . . Palmerston.—-Additional furniture for secondary pupils when they were obliged to occupy the science room recommended (cost £l3 10a).— Approved. Waikoikoi—Recommended the supply of a new tank for teacher’s residence (cost about £l2).—Approved. . George Street.—Repairs to window sash and handles of doors recommended.—ApFMV “' NEW APPLICATIONS.

Akatore.— Miss King, teacher, urged tho erection of the school building.—Department to be asked for an immediate reply. Duntroon. —Committee applied for improvements to out-offices at teachers residence and for painting interior of school. —Referred to architect. George Street.—School Committee asked board to reconsider its decision regarding provision of room for teachers and for the furnishing thereof. —Architect to carry out usual policy of furnishing. Architect to report to committees regarding the cost of a fence on tho slope at the rear of the school. Kurow.—Committee asked for a new table, with drawers.—Approved. Mnsgieh—Committee urged that a new residence be provided for the head master. —Architect to report on present residence, and plans for now houso to be prepared if report unfavorable. North-cast Valley. —(a) Improvement of new playground: Reported that in conference with tho Minister, the latter agreed to sanction a grant on a subsidy basis of £165 for this work, which includes one-third of the cost of work yet to ho undertaken in topdressing tho area. —Architect to confer with committee, (b) Heating of old infant room: Architect re- ! commended that a trial be made for this winter with the room as it was (register grate). IE found unsatisfactory, a stove would bo supplied next year. —Approved. Onniaru North.—Committee asked for shelter shed for the pupils’ bicycles, estimated cost £lO, to replace the _ provision previously made by the committee, and stated to be now utilised by tho board for another purpose.—Architect to act. Portobello.—Committee asked for new tank for school and for subsidy of £5 or more for hedge cutting.—Subsidy granted, architect to report regarding tank. | Uavensbourne. —Head master asked for ■ 48ft of wall blackboard, cost about £7.— Architect to act.

Tamil.—School Committee asked for small bookcase.—Granted.

Kdievale.—The department intimated that, having regard to the spare accommodation at Dunrobin, and also to the prospects of the proposed school, it could not see its way to sanction a grant.—Received. Mosgicl.—School Committee objected to ono of the teachers acting in an official capacity as a scrutineer at recent licensing poll.—To be referred to teacher concerned. Pounawca.—Mrs E. Brownlie asked the board to supply a horse, saddle, and bridle, and pay for horse feed and shoes, for the conveyance of her two children to Owaka.—Declined, applicant to be informed that she could apply for an allowance. Mocraki.—Mrs Challas asked permission to occupy the small section adjoining her ground at Moeraki and erect a crib for Sir Trygoason, who was looking after her property. She offered 10s p.a. rent. —Referred to committee. Portobcllo.—Mr Smith asked permission to let the school glebe for grazing.—Approved. Dunback.—Mr Anderson, head teacher, asked permission to let the school glebe.— Approved.
