Some antiquarians suggest that the best man is so called because he was originally tho chief of tho bridegroom’s bodyguard, who wore a necessary protection in lawless times, especially when, as was not infrequently the case the bride had been stolen. A more romantic but less plausible explanation of the best man is that he (invariably a bachelor) as symbolical of broken ties with the past which the bridegroom is putting behind him. Another theory which often works out in practice is that his destiny, is to marry one of the bridesmaids.
